c SECTION 3- PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER HERALD. WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 3.1 Influenza once thought to come from heavens Classes xt for arthritics'over 60 Centuries ago, people thought that influenza was caused by an influence of the heavenly bodies. Today we know that the cause of influenza is not in the stars but in a family of viruses. Influenza, or flu as it is more commonly known, is a respiratory disease caused by two types of influenza virus A and B. Each type includes many related viruses or strains, each different from the others, and each capable of causing flu. The effects of influenza vary from mild upper-respiratory infection to pneumonia and death. Reactions to an influenza virus depends on an individual's susceptibility and general physical conditon. Flu isn't a serious threat for most healthy people, but it may be more severe or last longer in "high-risk" individuals: the chronically ill and the elderly. A high-risk individual's chance of developing severe complications from influenza is much greater. Those in high risk categories include: people over 65, or persons of any age who have a chronic medical con dition such as heart disease; Steve Smith, left, and Jim Smith prepare for a tag day that will be held at various locations around the county, to benefit the 4-H Foundation. 4-H announces tag day On Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., 4-H members, parents and friends will par ticipate in a tag day to raise funds for "$4 Million for 4-H," a capital endowment drive to generate funds for the con tinuation and expansion of 4-H program in Illinois. The volunteers, easily iden tified by their green and white 4- H aprons, will be soliciting donations in most major shopping areas throughout McHenry County. Contributors will receive an official 4-H button to advertise their support for the .youth organization. The "$4 Million for 4-H in Illinois" drive is a three-year attempt by the Illinois State 4-H Foundation to provide adequately for future youth programs. Each county in the state has been assigned the raising of a suggested portion of the fund. In McHenry County, the first year's quota is being raised through private con tributions, a "benefit per formance at the Woodstock Opera House, and proceeds from a dollhouse which was given away on Sept. 23L September was also the beginning of the new 4-H Club year and during 4-H Club Week many local window displays will tell the 4-H story. Boys and girls between the ages of eight and 19 who are interest in enrolling in 4- H may call the McHenry County Cooperative Extension Service at 337-3737 or 338-4747. Woodstock, Ringwood men charged for two burglaries PlaindMUr-Hcrald N«ws Service A Woodstock man and a Ringwood man have been charged in connection with two burglaries in Woodstock and may be implicated in four others in McHenry County, Woodstock police reported Friday. Kenneth R. Szamlewski, 24, 5024 Barnard Mill Road, Ringwood, and Michael G. Epping, 23,1917 Sheila St., Apt. 204, Woodstock, were arrested by Woodstock police Thursday night. They were charged in connection with the Woodstock thefts. Police said the pair was arrested after a local officer overheard information that reportedly linked the two men to one of the burglaries. The two local burglaries occured at Coachlight Inn restaurant and Punjabi Brothers restaurant. Coachlight Inn reported a Shrimp Season Ending Soon - STOCK UP NOW! Fresh - never frozen... This includes people on medications that suppress the immune system. Keepin' Healthy: There are several com plication that can follow flu. Of special concern are pneumonia, persistant cough or bronchitis, sinus trouble and ear infection. There also has been an association with an increased incidence of Reye Syndrome among children and adolescents. Influenza vaccine is not routinely given to patients in nursing homes and hospitals, however. The decisions to give the vaccine is determined by the patient's phsician. On very rare occasions, a person may be allergic to some substance in the vaccine, and vaccination in such a case may not be recom mended. The majority of people suffer no adverse reactions at all from vaccination. About one-third have nothing more than a red wheal on their arm. Others may have a sore arm for a day or two. Still other may have fever, chills, headache, or muscle aches within the first 24 to 48 hours after vaccination. Any vaccine or drug is assumed to have some possiblity of an allergic reaction, but studies consistently conclude that the potential benefits of influenza vaccine outweight any potential hazards. Any women who is pregnant, or who thinks she might be pregnant, should talk with her doctor before getting a shot. For a normally healthy pregnant woman beyond her first trimester, the vaccine shouldn't pose a problem for either her or the fetus, but again, it should be the doctor's decision. A single case of influenza appears occasionally, but usually the disease occurs in outbreak form. People catch it from each other, and they catch it so easily that it isn't unusual for a large part of a community to come down with it within a few days of the first reported cases. Outbreaks of influenza usually last less than a month in a community, but that same strain may appear in a number of places at the same time or closely following one knottier. Immunity doesn't develop for 10 to 14 days following vac cination. That's why the state health department urges "high- risk" individuals to get their vaccinations in the early fall before the flu season begins. The McHenry Department of Parks and Recreation is about to begin two fall-winter sessions in exercise for order residents. Persons of all ages who suffer from arthritis will enjoy the "Exercise for Arthritis" class, designed to limber up joints and maintain muscle strength. The class will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Oct. 9 at the McHenry Public Library. The cost is $20 for an eight-week session. A dance and exercise class, designed for those over 60, will begin Oct. 9 at the McHenry Public Library. The eight-week class will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays through Dec. 4. The fee is $20. Physical limitations are not a problem. Even persons wheelchair-bound are welcome. It is suggested that participants wear loose-fitting clothing. ^RSERvfcENAL DIRECTORY JACK WALSH.
