PAGE 21 - PLAINDEALER HERALD, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, lt84 On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt McHenry, I.C. for homecoming With all the activities at both campuses this week, the Fighting Warriors" should have no trouble getting up for tonight's game against Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst. Both schools - East and West - are going all out for a gala homecoming celebration, with today being Orange and Black Day, followed by a Pep Rally at McCracken Field, and then the annual parade through the business district. The foe on the football field - the Knights of I.C. - will to spoil the festivities. Having won only once in their last 13 outings, the Knights of coach Jack Lewis are yearning to get into the win column this season. Going just 1-8 last year, the Knights have lost all four this year, including a tough 10-3 loss to West Suburban Catholic Conference foe St. Edward of Elgin last Saturday. According to Warrior coach Joe Schlender, the Knights art better than 0-4, but they haven't gotten any breaks this season. THE KNIGHTS have a huge line, averaging around 19# lbs. per man. This is large for a high school team, but they also lack the speed and quickness of much smaller squads. It will be the Warriors' speed and quickness the strength of the Knights. Last year, the Warriors finally got the the monkey off their backs, defeating Cary-Grove 20-14 for their first homecoming win after a 12-year drought. McHenry would like to make it two in a row at homecoming, to please the old grads in attendance at the game. Even in their loss to Crystal Central last Saturday, the Warriors showed improvement. Time ran out or. them in the closing seconds of the first half, as they were in scoring range. Trailing 14-8 at the time, a score could have made the difference. The Warriors' prpblem was similar to the ones the University A Illinois and the Chicago Bears had in their games last weekend. WITH JIM SHAVER back in the lineup, to complement the fine talents of the rest of the Warriors, McHenry should be ready for the Knights tonight lie passing combination of Warrior quar terback Craig HiU to receiver Curt Justen may remind old-timerc of Isbel to Hutson . .e old Green Bay Packers. A new wrinkle -ade its presence felt in the Fax Valley Conference this se«lM/ Mead' of playing regular J.V. and tophomore 'B4 games, most of the teams are playing a controlled scrimmage. In talking with coach Dan Boland of the Warriors, and several Crystal Lake coaches, they &U agree this is a great thing to happen in the league. Most of these players see little or no atu^u in their gamAa on Friday night or Saturday afternoon. With limited personnel at some positions, the coaches agreed to give each team a number of plays, about 40 each. This gives the coaches who are on the field the opportunity to talk to the players, point out mistakes and give pats on the back -- all with no pressure to win. IT ALSO GIVES fellowship among the opposing players. As one Crystal Lake coach remarked, "It takes away any hard feelings from the previous sophomore or varsity game." If the coaches like it the players like it, maybe the con ference will adopt it as a policy. So far it has proved successful. It is something the conference officials will have to consider when they have their annual meeting. Coach Bill Hutchinson's running Warriors will trek to Peoria tomorrow for the Peoria Invitational. This is the state - largest meet outside of the state meet. With 44 schools competing, the Warriors will be in good company. We, along with all Voirior fans, wish them the best of luck. The Warrr j Mnished third in the Palatine Invitational last Saturday, bet* J earn' ood and Schaumburg, two top Illinois teams. PAM SCHAEFER'S volleyball team will try to get inu> the win columi^ this wek in the Fox Valley with matchcs against Cary- Grove and Woodstock. One of these days, the gir'a are going to break loose and surprise someone in the conference. Next Tuesday, Chuck Cuda's golf team took it on the chin this week, but play Central and Wauconda before next weekend's Fox Valley meet at Crystal Lake. Tomorrow, Mike Shanahan's girls' swimming team will he at the Rockford Jefferson Invitational. So far this season, the young team has done quite well, and their next meet will be at West Campus next Thursday against Woodstock, beginning at 4:30 p.m. 1 GO TWO weeks without cracking my crysi.:! b? l and Jimmy the Greek starts calling me on the phone aski g for some help. Where was he the past five years when I could*'t pick a winner? Anyway, I finally caught up with our sports jutor, and we are knotted at 24-6 on the season. I was 6-0 last week, he missed on the Warriors to go 5-1. This week will be a challenge for both of us, as the games will not be easy to pick. Rabbitt: I'm going to pick the Warriors over I.C. I can't stand the stares, the glares and the cold shoulder in the classroom any longer. Jacobs over Cary-Grove, Woodstock over Dundee-Crown, Richmond over Valley Lutheran, Marian Central over Round Lake. Johnsburg over Marengo and for the tough one I'll pick the Gators of CL South over the Tigers of Central in which should be a real battle between cross-town rivals. Juzwik: OK. I let him catch up. There's really only one tough game this week, with another one in-between. He must be looking at a different schedule. McHenry should win handily, as will Woodstock, Marian, Johnsburg and especially the awesome * Richmond-Burton Rockets. Cary-Grove is playing well, and Jacobs gave Woodstock a rough time last week, but I'll go with the Golden Eagles. In the battle of Crystal Lake, South's homecoming could be a factor. But negatively or positively? J "like Central. Bill Mack always has his teams ready. South's a little too flashy, and will psych themselves out of a win. | CRYSTAL BALL PICKS: WEEK 5 Rabbitt Juzwik »I.C. at McHenry McHenry McHenry I Johnsburg at Marengo Johnsburg Johnsburg t Round Lake at Marian Marian Marian ; Valley Luth. at Richmond Richmond Richmond ; Jacobs at Cary-Grove Jacobs Jacobs ; DC at Woodstock Woodstock Woodstock Central at South South Central : 'V • • i * .'Will CMJjRY Skyhawk spikers beat by Rams, inconsistency JOHNSBURG - In. consistency is the scourge of any coach, and Johnsburg High School volleyball coach Sharal Johnson is no exception. The Skyhawks have had more ups and downs than an overused yo-yo this season, and Tuesday's loss to Grayslake was another slide downward. The Skyhawks lost to the Northwest Suburban Conference foe Rams at Johnsburg 4-15, 15- 5, 8-15 in a match indicative of the team's season. Was Johnson disappointed in her team's performance? "Very," she said. "Look at the scores. The odds are the team that wins the second game in a three-game match will usually win the match, with the momentum they havo. We win 15-5 in the second game, and still lose." THE SKYHAWKS have not strung together three straight wins at any time this season, and the loss to Grayslake dropped them to 7-5 overall, 5-4 in the NWSC. Johnsburg has had two two-match winning streaks on the year, but never a two- match losing string. In short, inconsistent. "We missed some key serves again," lamented Johnson after the Grayslake loss. "Like I've said before, it's psychological. We're not lucky when we play well and win, it's skill. They told me after the match they just weren't fired up. They have to get themselves motivated," she said. Johnson said the absence of Deb Tvaroh has hurt the Skyhawks recently. "It hurts when she's not there," Johnson said. "She played in the second game (against Grayslake) and we won, but her foot started to hurt again and sh-2 couldn't play the third" JOHNSON HAD hoped her team would vie for conference honors this season, but it hasn't worked out that way.
