SECTION 2 - PAGE 10 - PLAINDEALER HERALD, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5,1«4 Society's trash problems are lessened by recycling Wonder Lake property owners have successful convention Until such time as recycling becomes an adopted method of trash disposal by the garbage disposal industry, recycling drives such as those conducted on the first and third Saturdays of each month by the McHenry County Defenders are the best way that concerned citizens can help solve several problems. Conservation of raw materials and energy and reduction of landfilling lead the list. Even more important is the pollution of our groundwater from leaking landfills. The next Defender recycling drive will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of McHenry Com munity High School West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Rd. / Items which will be accepted at the drive include newspaper withtfio magazines or junk mail induced, "tin" cans rinsed and flattened, glass containers with all metal and plastic removed, cardboard and brown paper bags, used motor oil, and aluminum scrap of all kinds. The Defenders will also buy 100 percent aluminum cans. Market prices will be paid. Pastel painting demonstration set Pamela Swan son will present a pastel painting demonstration of an animal at the Northland Area Art League meeting Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. at the McHenry County Farm Bureau, 11909 McConnell Road, Wood stock. Ms. Swanson has obtained her BFA and MA degrees at Nor thern Illinois University and has also studied at the American Academy of Art. In addition, she taught art at the high school level for seven years, print- making at Harper College, and currently teaches life drawing at the American Academy of Art. Her exhibits have been seen in Denver, Minnesota and Wisconsin. She has recently been accepted in the Pastel Society of America with an exhibition in New York City. Recyclers can receive the best price for cans by flattening them for two cents extra per pound. A bonus for lots of more than 100 pounds of one cent per pound will also be paid. A second recycling op- i portunity for 100 percent aluminum cans and glass containers will be available on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon. The drive will be located in the parking area behind McHenry FS, 4004 W. Elm St. McHenry. Access to the area made via Borden Street. The delegates and directors of the Master Property Owners Association for the Wonder Lake area recently met in their 189th Annual Convention and dealt with a number of issues facing the MPOA. The business of the day was handled with a rapidity which surprised all who were in at tendance, according to Craig Pfannkuche of the MPOA. Among the items dealt with was the unanimous granting of the petition from the Highland Shores subdivision to formalize the 1954 unofficial grant of lake use rights to property owners in Highland Shores who live west of Thompson Road. . , delegates also voted to establish a Lake Bottom Cleanup Fund with $3,000 taken from the MPOA's Mosquito Abatement Fund. Pfannkuche reported that some members believed that, since McHenry Township was doing much of the mosquito control work in the Wonder Lake area the MPOA had been doing, the surplus in the Mosquito Abatement Fund would be better used to help clean up stumps and old debris from the bottom of Wonder Lake. In continuing the efficient atmosphere evident at the convention, the MPOA directors unanimously elected the 1985 slate of MPOA nominees as presented to the directors. Ed Beard of White Oaks Bay (4912 Willow Drive, 653-9221) will continue in his position as president of the MPOA after being re-elected to a fourth one- year term. . C h a r l e s J a c o b s e n , representing Wonder Lake Realty Trust (3707 Ridge Lane, 653-6554), won.election for the first time as first vice president of the association. Anne Wenk of Shore Hills (7711 Orchard, 653- 9418) was elected to her second term as second vice president. Pfannkuche, of Highland Shores (8612 Memory Trail, 653- 9459), was re-elected to his fourth term as secretary of the MPOA. . Gus Jeffrey of Hickory Falls 3 (2509 Maple wood) was elected to serve his first term as the treasurer of the Masters Association. In a statement following the unanimous vote for the slate, Beard stated: "Today's display of teamwork by the directors and delegates as well as the unanimous election of the slate of officers presented by the MPOA Nominating Committee, is good evidence that the Masters Association has suc ceeded in rising to the position where its leadership role in caring for and improving our beautiful lake is a certain fact in the minds of our area's residents. I am pleased and proud of what our group's directors and delegates have achieved today." Another delegate stated: "I can't believe how smoothly we worked today. We accomplished all of our work in less than three hours. We're an organization which can, really get things done."
