Mjelanie McWilliams, Elaine votyrins and Jeff Gealow were named as semi-finalists, ac­ cording to information released »>y the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. In! addition, Linda 'Gallo and Alan Gin, both of West Campus, and Carol Snyder, of East Campus were accorded "Commended Student" status for their academic per­ formance. These students placed within the top five per­ cent of more than 1 million participants in the 30th annual competition. McWilliams, Robbins and Gealow must advance to the finalist stage in order to con­ tinue in the competition for about 5,500 merit scholarships. Every finalist is considered for one of the single-payment "National" awards, which are allocated by state. Winners in each state will be those students judged to h&ve the strongest combination of academic and e x t r a c u r r i c u l a r a c ­ complishments. In 1985, these awards will be increased from $1,000 to $2,000 and 1,800 will be offered. Finalists who meet preferential criteria of award grantors will compete for 3,700 four-year merit scholarships in two classes. About 1,400 will be corporate-sponsored awards which provide between $500 and $2,000 per year. Corporate sponsors may specify their four- year scholarships for finalists who are children of employees, residents of a company's service area, or students with career goals the company wishes to encourage. / The other 2,300 scholarships will be financed by colleges and universities for finalists who & attend their' schools. The stipends range from $250 to $2,000 per year. 7 The semi-finalists in each state represent about one-half of one percent of the state's high school graduating class.
