With this dramatic reality as a backdrop, the Woodstock- McHenry League of Women Voters continues its study of marital law with a program on "Divorce." On Thursday evening, Oct. 11, they will present a discussion featuring Laura Gitlin, a family law attorney associated with Leonard Loeb in Milwaukee, and two divorcees who will share their knowledge and experiences. Among topics to be discussed will be the new divorce laws, including the "no-fault" law, and whether they help or hinder the divorce process. The new federal law allowing the gar­ nishing of wages for main­ tenance and child support, and whether or not it is effective, willA be included in the discussion. Other areas to be covered include the equitable division of / marital assets, alimony payments, and the questions of joint or sole custody child support and visitation rights. Guest speaker, Ms. Gitlin, is a Woodstock native and a recent graduate of Loyola University Law School. While at Loyola, she taught legal writing, was the research assistant for her family law professor, and was editor of the "Women's Law Reporter," a periodical dealing solely with women's legal issues. Upon graduation she received a special award for service and leadership. She has done extensive research for several articles on family law, divorce and custody and she recently submitted a paper dealing with tortious in­ terference with custody. The Oct. 11 meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m." at the Free Methodist Church, 934 Seminary (Rt. 47), in Woodstock. The program is part of a two-year study of marital law in the state being conducted by the League of Women Voter. Lakeland Park Women's Club invites new members, guests The next meeting of the Lakeland Park Women's Club will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m., in the Lakeland Park Community House, 1717 N. Sunset Ave. Marie Nichols and Barbara Meurer will be hostesses. Guests and newcomers are most welcome, and former members are urged to attend again. The first fall meeting of the group began with a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the community house, hosted by the officers. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Barbara Meurer, who welcomed everyone and thanked the ladies for the delicious meal. Vice-President Marie Cross advised that she will take care of making arrangements for the annual club Christmas dinner party to be held Thursday, Dec. 13. There will be the usual $3 grab bag gift exchange. Announcements revealed that lap robes and bibs for the nur­ sing homes are to b& brought to the November meeting; the FISH collection amounted to $23; and hostess lists were completed for the balance of the- year. v A brief copy ofbthe history of the club from 1956 through 1966 was located in the old files. Copies were made and sold at. the meeting to enrich the. treasury a little bit, and inform members "how things used to< be" a long time ago. Illinois Day to be observed at VFW National Home 50th anniversary Oct. 17: Split pea soup, sloppy Joe on bun, Duchess potatoes, green beans, crackers, rice pudding, milk. Oct. 18: Roast sirloin of beef, parsleyed potatoes, mixed vegetables, cottage cheese with pears, bread, margarine, ap­ plesauce cake, milk. Oct. 19: Baked fish with lemon sauce, seasoned rice, peas and carrots, tossed salad with dressing, bread, margarine, chilled peaches, milk. The children of Eugene and Anna Hughes will host a celebration of the oouple's 50th wedding anniversary at an open house to be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 in St. Patrick's Church Hall. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. The fogner Anna Pesz and Eugene Hughes were united in Holy Matrimony before F. O'Rouke on Oct. 6,1934 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, McHenry; They are parents of three children, Gene, Joanne Garrelts and Rosa Reiche, all of McHenry. The couple resides at 1106 S. Pontiac, McHenry. Square dances scheduled The Woodstock Squares, a plus level square dancing group, will hold two dances in the month of October. The first will be on Friday Oct. 5 "Ghosts and Goblins", with Don Smith calling. It will be held at Clay Street School, 620 Clay, in Woodstock. The second which will be held Oct. 19, with Jerry Pinkston calling, will be a - special "Halloween Barn Dance", held at Meikel's Barn, 2110 Country Club, Rd., Woodstock. Costumes are optional. Both dances will run from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Admission will be $5 per couple and refreshments will be served. Illinois Day will be observed on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Home by Illinois members of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary. * The National Home, which is funded by membership of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary was established in 1925. From a single farmhouse and farm buildings near Eaton Rapids, Mich, it has grown to nearly 50 units which include a health and education center, community center, day nursery, guest lodge, chapel, grocery store,- administration building and homes. The home was founded to care for and educate widows and children of the V.F.W. and its Ladies Auxiliary. The children live in homes with a house mother or house parents, providing a family environment and members of a family are kept together in the same house. The children attend public schools in Eaton Rapids and are given an opportunity to attend college or trade school through the home scholarship program which is funded by contributions from Ladies auxiliaries throughout the country. During the 1983-84 year of the Ladies auxiliary the National organization gave over $142,000 to the National Home. This money has beOta used' for operation costs of the , com­ munity center, health and education building, guest lodge and street lighting. New dental equipment was purchased as well as a new boiler for the guest lodge. Graduation and Christ­ mas gifts were purchased fdf the home residents. To be eligible to reside at the home, the child or family must have a parent or grandparent who is a member of the Veteran^ of Foreign Wars or its Ladiep auxiliary. Children of any age through 18 are taken into the home. Chris Tsilis, State of Illinois commander of the V.F.W. and Lillian Cyborski, State of Illinois Ladies auxiliary president will attend and tour the National Home grounds on Illinois Day. The Ladies Auxiliary to V.F.W. Post 4600, whose National Home chairman is Gail Szamlewski states the local auxiliary annually gives financial contributions to all the programs at the National Home.
