\ SECTION 2 • PAGE 4 - PLAIN DEALER HER ALI). WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10,1984 Stellar cast gives new life to La Mancha by Adele Froellch Don Quixote, the 16th century madman who imagined himself a 12th century knight-errant, came to life on the stage of the Woodstock Hpuse last weekend. And alive it was with sometimes majestic, sometimes frivolous and always interesting melodies. Seldom has this historic stage been the setting for finer casting, led by Robert Riner in the title role and the beautiful Virginia Zymonas as Aldonza, the free An admiring Don Quixote (Bob Reiner) talks to his Dulcenea (Virginia Zymonas) in the Woodstock Musica Theatre Com pany's production of "Man of LaMancha." It is presented weekends through Oct. 20 at the Woodstock Opera House. Call ($15) 338-5300 for tickets or further information. E ARE NOW OPEN! WOODSTOCK RACQUETBALL __CLUB_ . Comedy relief from the drabness of a prison vault is car ried out in good style by David Cornelia as Quixote's manservant who admits to having "a belly full of proverbs." Praise for lead roles cannot minimize the excellent per formances by a cast of supporting characters. One of the best voices on stage was that of the Padre in the person of Richard Austin. Too brief were the moments of finely-tuned ensemble singing that came as the orchestra sud denly cut short its dramatic rendi tion for a change of tenor. Hal Thompson of Johnsburg held a firm baton as he skillfully guided the orchestra through a score that was more demanding than most. The dynamic mood of the music made it evident to a near capacity audience Saturday night that these talented musi cians were indispensable to the excellent production they were en joying. If there was one small flaw it k was in the few occasions when some voices failed to rise above the orchestra sufficiently to con vey the text. However, this was of minor consequence in a vehicle where the story line was relatively unimportant in comparison to the acting and vocal demands. In a season of wagering, we would be willing to bet that many performances of La Mancha by larger, professional theater groups could not measure up. The play continues weekends through Oct. 20.
