No one csn say the Cubs and the organization didn't give fans a lot of thrills as they got off the ground in spring training to win their divi sion. ***** » If you feel bad about the Cub loss to the Padres, just think how the plsyers' wives must feel. That World Series check could buy a lot of groceries -- and fur coats. So many Cub fans phoned last week to inquire about our health that it seemed we might have to get an unlisted number. ••••• If there was a sour note in that fifth game, it was the boos of Padre fans when Cub players were introduced before the game. Was that sportsmanship? ••••• Nobody was more nervous than Alvina during the last two games. She doesn't say much about it, but her leanings go to the Northsiders since the days of Gabby Hartnett. ***** Glad to see the regular umpires back for the fifth game. With the huge salaries paid the players, it would seem the umpires have been underpaid. ***** The only hitch in my thinking is a report that the umpires signed an agreement a short time ago to cover their pay for the next three years. If that is true, my thinking may change a bit Anyhow. I hate strikes. Too many people get hurt ***** Now, it can be told, I wouldn't admit it to my friends on the Cub side, but I was pulling for their team to w in If they were playing the White FISH now sorting clothing to give^ajvay this autumn FISH received large cash dona tions last year and used the money to purchase clothing and toys for this Christmas. The volunteers shopped "close- out" and "year-end" sales, and often were able to buy articles at 10 cents on the dollar. They have decided not to . wait until Christmas to distribute the clothing, for with school opening and cold weather due very soon, the need is now. Northern Illinois Medical Center allowed space in the Green Street building for sorting the clothing and also two rooms to store it for a couple of weeks until the items can be distributed. weather FISH has told Head Start they would probably have clothing ready in two weeks. The response to the FISH re quest for all types of furniture and household articles was very good. To date FISH has received 37 calls offering help. The small family in need has moved into their apart ment, and is grateful. Donations to FISH are tax duductable. Sox, no way would I be for them. ***** Among the many phone calls to our house was one from Florida with "Big John" Busscher at the other end of the line. ***** So I Hear by Earl Walsh John wanted to be sure our bet is still on for the World Series. When he lived in our area, he had one wall papered with greenbacks he won from me. **••• Among the real sports fans we like to meet is Tim Reilly. He knows sports. ***** It is a funny day when our mail doesn't include one or two appeals for donations. If you are on one mailing list, you are on all of them. ***** People in other countries must wonder about our candidates for the Presidency. I hate to think they are as bad as painted. •**•• With a cold in the bead for several weeks, I met Jack Slaughter smoking his pipe. A cou ple of second hand whiffs cleared my bead better than medicine. But the after effects! *••** Morrie Crouch tells us about ^a prize muskie caught by Fox Hole Evo near Sayner, Wis. Morrie was there and vouches for the story. ***** Marie Niesen heard about our spell with hiccups and brought us a pamphlet put out by the Mayo Clinic on the problem. I must write out the prescription given to me by my daughter-in- law, Donna. It is called the barkeeper's remedy. It stopped my hies immediately and isn't hard to take. Maybe Mayo's would like to hear about it. ***** You can blame Bob Freund for that picture advertising the Rotary ham dinner. He led me into something. I should have had Wally Ander son with me. He and I were charter members of the local 4-H Club. If you missed the McHenry County Sports program at the Historical Society, you can bear the tape on cable TV twice this week. Check your listings.
