Dick Klemm (R- Crjstal Lake) announced that Hoom Bill 2211, allowing residents of private subdivisions to request traffic enforcement on their ateets, has been signed into law The new provisions were included in an amendment to the bill, sign- eft recently by Gov. James Thompson. "I'm very pleased that the governor has approved this m e a s u r e , " s a i d K l e m m . 'Residents of private subdivisions have the right to expect the same courtesy from drivers as residents of incorporated areas. Thanks to this new law, subdivisions can now request police enforcement of the same traffic laws that all motorists must obey ." The amendment was the result of cooperative efforts with Rep. Klemm on the part of residents of McHenry and Lake counties, police and sheriffs personnel, state police and representatives from the state Motor Vehicles Laws Commission. Input from the various groups was gathered last year at a public hearing chaired by Rep. Klemm, who incorporated the suggestions into the new law. Under the new provisions, p r i v a t e s u b d i v i s i o n s w i t h homeowners' associations will be able to submit a written request to appropriate locStl authorities, ask ing for enforcement of the vehicle code on their roads Until now, private subdivisions were pro hibited from posting speed limits and arresting violators. None of the motor vehicle laws applied to the areas. A motorist did not even need to have a" driver's license to drive within a private subdivision. " S a f e s t r e e t s a n d neighborhoods are everyone's c o n c e r n , " s a i d K l e m m . "Residents of private subdivisions pay taxes. Their children should be able to play safely without fear o' motorists speeding down residential streets. This law gives homeowners the controls they n e e d t o p r o t e c t t h e i r neighborhoods from reckless drivers."
