SECTION 2• PAGE 8 • PLAINPEALLR IIEKAIJ). FRIDAY,OCTOBER 12.1984 Lead poisoning is not uncommon Many parents who work with lea<J, are unaware that they may be poisoning their children. The symptoms of lead poisoning are not always visible, but in large enough quantities, lead can cause permanent brain damage, mental retardation, blindness, muscle weakness and even death. What is a large enough quanti ty? If a small child were to eat a dime-sized flake of lead paint con taining only one percent lead each dajrfor three months, he could suf fer lead poisoning. Lead is found everywhere: in newsprint, putty, soft metal objects and toys, even magazines and comic books if red or orftnge colors have been used. If ^ou work with lead, you can carry lead dust home without reacting it. Some of the occupa tions which carry a potential for exposure to lead include lead smelting; battery manufacture and*reclamation; radiator repair; pottery manufacture; automotive mflghine shop work; electronic soldering; spray painting with lea^based paint; firing range supervision; gasoline refining; printing (if it involves the manufacture, use, or reclamation of lead printing surfaces); cable stripping or splicing; die casting; and hobbies such as stained glass window design or casting bullets. This, of course, is not a complete list." As a consequence of this poten tially serious hazard, the state health department recommends that you adopt the following precautions. They will reduce your child's risk of exposure to FA^L COLORS The Illinois Department of Conservation is again in fall leaf color as it develops throughout the state. Interested persons may call (217) 785-4503 for a statewide leaf color report and an indication of the anticipated forfest fire danger rating for the upcoming weekend. The in- formation is updated weekly and is intended to help those who desire to make travel plans for fall leaf color outings. lead from your work place* • If you can, change your work clothes before you leave your work place. Shampoo and shower thoroughly. Put your work clothes in a plastic bag. • If this is not possible, as soon as you arrive home, remove your shoes and clothing. Do this in an area away from the living or play areas. Store your soiled work clothes and shoes in a strong plastic bag. Wash these clothes separately from all other clothing. Take a shower and shampoo your hair. • Vacuum the carpets in your home daily and mop the hard floors twice a week. • Change the furnace and air conditioner filters frequently. • Use the steam extraction method in cleaning carpets and upholstered furniture. • If you bring personal items home from work, such as. a li box, be sure to keep thfina^jway from children. This includes any discarded industrial articles which could carry leack If small children get them, theyNpiay put them in their mouths. There is only one way y*u can know for sure whether your child has lead poisoning and that is to have your child tested. Fortunate ly this is a simple procedure. The test is a quick finger stick to col lect a few drops of blood which are sent to a laboratory to be analyz ed. It is quick, easy and free of charge. Most local health depart ments provide the service. Since the lead is common in the environment, children may be ex posed to multiple lead sources, and an attempt should be made to identify all sources for each child with excessive absorption.
