PAGE 4 - PKAI!NDEALER HERALD, FRIDAY. OCTOBER 12.1904 Film, speakers to be presented at workshop on alcoholism "Lots of Kids Like Us", a film to be presented at the Children of Alcoholics seminar in the Orange Lecture Hall at College of Lake » County from 9 a.m. until noon on Tuesday, Oct. 23, describes a new discovery in the family disease of i alcoholism. Beyond discovery, the seminar, hosted by the Prevention Services Office of the College of Lake Coun ty, will focus on solution and recovery for the troubled children of alcoholics. Presenting the topic will be two top people in the field: Kathy Nielsen, director of chemical dependency programs at Victory Memorial Hospital and Victor Manzon, program therapist at the Lake County Alcoholism Treat ment Center. A representative from the new self-support group, "Adult Children of Alcoholics" will brief ly tell her story of being a third generation co-alcoholic and how her life was affected by growing up in a family steeped in alcoholism. Certain characteristics result from being brought up in an alcoholic home. Manzon's exper tise lies in working with young children. From the child's behavior he can diagnose when the illness began in the family, so predictable are the symptoms. From this awareness comes help and recovery. From their presentations atten dants may be better able to understand the disease of alcoholism, identify and relate compassionately to its victims, particularly the children of alcoholics. The workshop will be free for professionals, students and the general public. All <are encourag ed to attend to learn more about solution strides taking place in the widespread disease. Continuing education credits from IACCB are offered. Infant Phillips doing well Mi Phillips John Phiilips, the infant child of McHenry residents born with severe heart problems, is reportedly growing and progress ing well since his last hospitaliza tion According to Steve Phillips, the father of the child and teacher at Montini School, the baby now weighs 15 pounds and has been recovering well since he was discharged from the hospital on July 5. Phillips stated that the family's joy in experiencing the baby's good health should be shared by the many members of the com munity who helped out when things looked less hopeful. John Phillips underwent a series of operations since his birth and, more than once, doctors did not expect him to survive. Members of the community set up a fund to help the family pay medical costs. Volunteers, in cluding many of Phillip's students at Montini School, helped raise fuftds for the family at a local tag day, proclaimed by the City of McHenry. "All indications are that John will continue to improve without future surgery and be able to lead a normal healty life," stated his father. • BIGGEST EVENT , EVER! •.
