iibn^LU, MtlUA) .OtlUBbK 2b, 11NM Sports On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt FVC rivals dig in again Two of the oldest rivals in this area will do battle tonight in a Class 4A state and Fox Valley Conference champions are not the same team of last year. Gone is Bradshaw's son Greg, now a red shirt quarterback at Northwestern University, and also departed is a line that enabled the Streaks to completely dominate their opponents in 1983. This season has been a different story. Woodstock has been struggling all year, and even with running back Warren Wolschlager rushing for 800 yards, have not been impressive. Even so, they have won five and lost two. The Streaks have a nine-game Winning streak over McHenry, and Schlender's crew hopes to put a halt to that string tonight. THE %ARRIORS HAVE looked impressive the past three weeks, improving with each game. Pat Dunne has rushed for over 600 yards this season, Curt Justen has been on the receiving end of Craig Hill's passes 14 times for over 300 yards, and Hill has tossed for almost 700 yards with eight touchdowns. The defense has been simply outstanding the past three weeks, and we can expect a usual Warrior-Blue Streak game tonight. onal Cross- the boys to During the past years, it's been a battle all the way. Tomorrow, McHenry wil host the I.H.S.A. Regi Country meet. The girls will begin at 10 a.m. with follow at 10:45. Schools participating are: Jacobs, Antioch, Barrington, Dundee-Crown, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, Grant, Lake Zurich, Johnsburg, Round Lake, Wauconda, Woodstock and the girls' team from Marian Central. THE FIRST FOUR TEAMS of boys and the first five of girls will advance to the Niles West Sectional next week. The first five runners who are not members of those teams advancing, will also , qualify for the sectional. Coach Bill Hutchinson hopes to see a large Warrior crowd on hand for the meet, and to root his team on to a sectional berth. This type of event usually draws quite a crowd, and we hope Warrior fans turn out to see this meet., Back to football. The Warriors, in last Friday's victory over Dundee-Crown, plaved the game as former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes would have liked it. They ground out yardage, and it was a rock 'em, sock 'em type of game. . It was my kind of football, and I nope the Warriors continue to do the same tonight in Woodstock. How do these young fellows make it look so easy? Also to*erry Porter on being selected to the All-Fox Valley Conference team. The winless Warriors did have spme fine players, and it is a tribute to Kerry after her fine play throughout the season. Wade Cepulis, former Warrior harrier, is a member of the cross-country team at the University of Illinois, and is the number five runner. The former Warrior finished 21st in the Vincent Memorial Invitational at Ames, Iowa several weeks ago. The Mini finished second behind host school Iowa State. The course was 10,000 meters, and Cepulis' time was 33:09. WELL, WE GAINED another one on you know who during the past week's selections. Maybe next week I'll have him look at my crystal ball before he makes his picks. He couldn't do any worse than he's doing now. After his 5-2 week last time, his season record is a poor 38-13. Another 6-1 outing gives me a 42-9 mark on the year. k is an easy one to pick. With Curt Justen Warriors giving me inside information, I'll pick McHenry over Woodstock. If they're wrong, there's a good chance they may do post-graduate work at McHenry High, the good ol' five-year plan. South to clinch the Fox Valley title with a win over Cary-Grove. Jacobs to lose Fremd, they're out of that class this year. Central to continue its search for, at-large bid with a win over Dundee-Crown. Marian to roll oV Gray slake, Johnsburg to defeat Round Lake, and the Rocketsoi Richmond- Burton to beat Hampshire." and Pat Dunne of the ft' Juzwik: "It's games, the next I'm'down four. Take your inside info, I'll put more public knowledge to my advantage. Bradshaw's gunning for his 100th victory Friday, and my guess is he'll get it in a close game. That's the only one 1 can take this week, but wait until next Friday. Rabbitt bites the dust in the season's final weekend. South should win big, ditto for Fremd. Central wins, Marian romps, Johnsburg by 21, R-B by more. Dick, I really do need a break next week. Please? The action was in the McHenry Regional at West Campus, where the previous night Johnsburg had halted the Warriors' season with a 15-6, 16-14, 13-15, 15-1 victory. Central, the Fox Valley Conference regular-season champ, rudely returned the favor in a well-played match, downing the 'Hawks 17- 15,11-15,15-5,15-12, catapulting the Tigers into last night's regional championship against Woodstock. The turning point came early in the match. Johnsbifrg held a commanding 13-5 lead in game one, before Central rallied to pull within three at 13-10. The Skyhawks had game point at 14-10 and 15- 14, but couldn't convert, allowing Central the opportunity to claim the game, which the Tigers did with pleasure. "That definitely hurt us the most,"said a disappointed Skyhawk coach Sharal Johnson. "Had we won that game, we would have been up 2-0 after winning the second." The Skyhawks did bounce back to win the second endeavor, grabbing an early lead and hanging on for the four-point win. Deb Tvaroh served five straight points to give Johnsburg a 12-5 lead. Laura Oeffling had three kills in that span. Central blitzed Johnsburg in game three, seizing a 10-3 lead and never looking back. The game ended on an ominous note as Cen tral's server lashed a screaming offering the Skyhawks couldn't return. "We didn't play well in the third game at all," Johnson conceded. The fourth game saw Johnsburg fight back to tie the game at 11, but Central hung on to claim the game - and the match. Johnsburg, which plays in the Northwest Suburban Conference, plays best-of-three matches during the regular season, while Central and its Fox Valley foes play best-of-five. Johnson felt the inexperience in playing five-game matches hurt her team in the regional. Wednesday's match didn't end until almost 11 p.m. "It really helps Central. Their endurance is a lot better because they're used to it. That probably hurt us the most." Johnson said Oeffling, Cris May and Linda Bartman played well for her squad against Central. * Johnsburg finished with a 13-7 record in an up-and-down season. Had someone offered Johnson a 13-7 season before the first practice this year, would she have taken it? "With 10 juniors on the team? Yeah, I sure would have." "I told the girls I didn't mind we lost, because we played well. They gave it our all, and that's all I could ask for." Warrior Porter is All-FVC Kerry Porter of McHenry High School has been named to the All-Fox Valley Con ference Volleyball team for 1984. Porter, a senior setter- hitter for the Warriors was the only McHenry player selected to the 15-member team. Two players were unanimous selections - Kris ti Oelkers of FVC champion Crystal Lake Central, and Heather Rayka of Jacobs. Rayka, along with Judy Barry of Central and Diana Wawrzyniak of Dundee-Crown were the only juniors on the squad. Sophomores Mary Jo Firnbach of Woodstock, Anne Arrigo of Cary-Grove and Christy Peterson of Crystal Lake - South were also tabbed All-FVC. Porter and her McHenry teammates had their season ended Tuesday night in the McHenry Regional, as Johnsburg won the best-of- five match in four games. Harriers aim for title By Chris Juzwik Plalndealer-Herald sport* editor McfHenry High's West Campus has been the site for three different post-season tournaments this past week. But the school's duties as host aren't quite finished yet. Last Saturday, the McHenry Tennis Sectional was played in town, and two Warrior doubles combinations - Michelle Landis and Geri Haner and Kris Wolff and Sara Bird -- advanced from the sectional into state com petition. Tuesday began three days of play in the McHenry Volleyball Regional, and the Lady Warriors weren't as fortunate as their tennis counterparts, as Johnsburg ousted them from further competition. But the hosts with the most, as it were, have to be the Warrior cross-country squad, which, after hosting the Fox Valley Conference meet last Saturday, which saw the boys finish in a second-place tie, will entertain once more for tomorrow's regional meet. CHRIS CREUTZ captured the conference title for the boys last week, becoming the third Warrior in the past four years to win the crown. Wade Cepulis in (Please turn to page 191 Numbers game no matter to MCHS |}y Chris Juzwik Plaladealer-Herkld sport* editor Woodstock football coach Bob Bradshaw will be shooting for his 100th career victory tonight, but that doesn't really matter to McHenry and coach Joe Schlender. TTie Warriors aren't shooting for such lofty numbers, nothing except for their fifth victory of what has suddenly turned into what could be an exceptional beason. "We have to prepare to play football, and I don't think it will affect Woodstock too much either," Schlender said. "Whether it was his 99th win or his 101st, it's really no different. Hie rest is icing on the cake." „ Woodstock will take its 5-2, 3-1 Fox Valley mark against 4*3, 2-2 McHenry Friday night at 8 p.m. The Warriors have won three straight. Woodstock still has hopes of a playoff berth. The Blue Streaks only shot is two wins and two Crystal Lake South losses. South downed Woodstock 21-12 earlier this season. Woodstock's other loss was a non-conference defeat at the hands of Riverside-Brookfield. McHENRY RAN AWAY -- literally -- from Dundee-Crown at McCracken Field last Friday, as the Warriors rushed for 274 yards, as both running backs - senior Pat Dunne and junior Jim Shaver - gained over 100 yards, en route to a 26-14 McHenry victory. "We didn't really want to get into a passing game with them (Dundee-Crown)," Schlender said. "We just wanted to control the ball and the clock, and keep the ball away from their offense. We basically wanted to prove to ourselves we could do it. We just said, 'try and stop us' and they couldn't." Schlender said the same strategy may - or may not - be employed Friday against Woodstock. "We'll have to wait and see," Schlender commented. "We want to force them to defend every threat. Our quarterback, our runners and our receivers. We'd like to put as much pressure as possible on their defense." SCHLENDER SAID Wood stock is strong against both the pass and the run. "We'll have to see what they do defensively. If they penetrate and stunt a lot, we'll nave to pass or run a trap.
