SECTION 2-PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER HERALD. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 2t, 1984 Heighborhood news Lakemoor/Lilymoor: New law better protects subdivision roads Judy Bird of Lily Lake Park Subdivision had long been concerned that the subdivision Margaret Karas 385-4934 »asTOR?"opeSemtoiy'Tor *?ders, motorcyclists, dirt i drivers and others, with no legal recourse. She wrote to State Representative Dick Klemm (her first letter to any public official) about the lack of police control on subdivision roads. Due to her concern, added to others with the same problems, Dick notified Judy that House Bill 2211 allowing residents of Sivate subdivisions to request affic enforcement on their streets, had been signed into law . Jpdy's day was definitely wroved on receipt of that r. It will now be necessary for a written request to be made to the county sheriffs department, asking for enforcement of the vehicle code on subdivision roads. Speed limits may now be posted, a valid driver's license will be necessary to drive on the roads, and violators will be arrested. NEW BUSINESS We have all been watching a new business building go up on Wilmot Road and the rumors have been flying as to what the business would be. Now, because of the name on the mailbox, we know that it is a doctor's office; but what kind of doctor- internist, optomologist, podiatrist? I have the straight scoop, as the doctor-called me. A Dan Icenogle, M.D., will be opening a general family Eractice soon. He has had roken promises with regard to the building completion date, but progress is being made and hopefully soon all will be ready for business. Dr. Icenogle and his wife live in the Village of Sunnyside. We welcome them as neighbors and wish them well. One of the best ways to save money on energy costs is to make improvements on your home that will help you use less energy. One of the easiest and most worthwhile things you can do is minimize your heating and cooling loss by caulking and weatherstripping. ' If you live in a typical home and install caulking and weatherstripping, you can trim your energy cost for heating by up to $40 per year. You'll recover your investment in two years or less, and after that it's money in the bank. Caulking and weatherstripping your house requires a minimum of tools, time and know-how. Even not-so-handy homeowners can easily handle this job. You use caulk to plug air leaks outside and weatherstripping inside to seal the openings around doorways and windows. WEATHERSTRIPPING-- "LET'S TALK CAULKING" First, survey your house from the outside. Look for gaps in the exterior walls where you need caulk. Note any missing or sun dried caulk especially on the south side of your house. Here's where to look: • Around all window and door frames •Around exhaust fan outlets (bath, kitchen or laundry! • Around window air conditioners • Around holes cut for hose faucet, wires and pipes • Around the chimney • Around lighting fixtures • Where masonry and siding meet. Cajilk is a flexible sealant designed to fill cracks and gaps in fixed joints of a house. One tube will till about 25 feet of a narrow V" crack or two small windows. In home centers and hardware stores you'll find a variety of caulks to choose from, but don't let that scare you. Ordinary- latex caulk is easy to use and cleanup, and a good bet for the first time user. Silconized caulk is more expensive, but it lasts considerably longer. If you can afford to use a better grade of caulking you won't have to re-do the job even* few years. Check the label to see if the caulk can be painted, how long it takes to dry. the type thinner recommended for cleanup and what the temperature requirements are. Don't forget to purchase a caulk gun. unless you purchase caulk that comes in pressurized cans. Caulk guns usually cost only a few dollars. ' 0 Clean out the joint thoroughly and let drv.'H Push the tube awav from vou Cut the tube tip off at a 45 degree angle making a 1 opening. Bfl With the tube in the gun. break the seal with a nail. U Place the nozzle in the crack and squeeze the trigger while pushing the tube away from you to fill the gap. H Fill deep cracks with several heads of caulk., • Clean up immediately and put a nail in the tub* nozzle to save for re-use. - V THE INDOOR SOLUTION Weatherstripping is the best way to stop air leaks. To detect hidden drafts inside, make your own distress flag by taping a piece of tissue to a pencil. On a breezy day use this detector to find air leaks by holding it near window sills and doorways. If the tissue moves. you've located a spot that needs weatherstripping. Here's where to look for drafts: m Around all windows and door frames • Space around pulleys in double-hung windows • At electrical wall outlets and switches in exterior walls • Around heating registers. Weatherstripping comes in many forms. For instance there are threshold weatherstripping materials . designed to fill the gap between the bottom of a door and floor. For doors and windows, there's spring metal or brass weatherstripping that's inexpensive and effective. Self-adhesive plastic weatherstripping is more expensive but easier to install. * As a handy temporary sealer, you can use caulking rope or cord. For electrical outlets and light switches. low cost foam rubber gaskets can be used to seal gaps. And, in your garage molded stripping is available to Seal your garage door. Installation is easy and you'll find instruc tions with each of these products. Metal weather stripping is easily cut with a heavy scissors or tin snips. Plastic is cut with a knife or scissors. Before applying adhesive-backed weatherstripping. clean the surface behind the glue for maximum grip. NOW'S THE TIME. Now's a perfect time to get to work on projects like caulking and weatherstripping. So why not start now? It'll be money in your pocket, when next winter rolls around. * Putty Knife Screwdriver Cloves O NORTHERN ILLINOIS GAS On* ol tin NICOR basic energy companies This is truly good news for all subdivisions. Through efforts such as Judy's, changes for the better can be made. These will benefit all small areas, in cluding Lily moor, Fritzsche Estates, Hidden Valley Acres and Parkside. , Congratulations, Judy; continue writing letters! ROAD IMPROVEMENT About three months ago, McHenry Township Highway Department workers cut down trees on the roadside of Lily Lake Road to the required depth of six feet from the edge of the road, to protect motorists from having an accident with a tree. We now have a lovely metal guard rail to prevent us from driving off Lily Lake Road into a previously unnoticed drop off. Is it better for motorists to hit the guard rail on a little skid in the winter, or be kept from dropping into a ravine by nature's protection of trees? The wisdom of where our tax money is used is questioned when natural costless products such as trees are mercilessly cut down to be replaced by long strips of metal, protecting motorists from heretofore unknown hazards.
