YURKO The ads tor "Irreconcilable Differences" would have us believe that the film tells the very contemporary tale of a 10-year-old child who is suing her parents for divorce. While that's certainly true, it's not so much the premise of the film as a format in which to present the real story: the rocky meet­ ing and mating of the child's parents. Ryan O'Neal plays a beard­ ed NYU film professor whose dissertation was on "The Sex­ ual Overtones in the Early Films Of Ernst Lubitsctv" If only there was more of "the Lubitsch touch" in this film. O'Neal is heading for a , teaching job in California when he is picked up by Shelley Long. She's headed for the West Coast as a bride-to-be That she becomes, only she weds Ryan O'Neal after a four- day courtship f. u Much of the rest ot the film sees the couple rise in the Hol­ lywood hierarchy. O'Neal to the status of celebrated film producer Miss long as his talented but unheralded screenwriter. Later. O'Neal falls for one of his leading ladies (played with lusty sex­ uality by newcomer Sharon Stone). while Miss Long leaves him -- only to write a best­ seller and become a trendy author. Shelley Long is delightful throughout and Ryan O'Neal has his best role in years, but the story has too many wrong notes Some scenes are farci­ cal (such as a musical version of "Gone with the Wind"), but others are melodramatic and almost meaningless.
