Charles Percy cut the nbbon on a new Crystal Lake business Saturday, ft was the campaigning Republican's first ^ " Visit to McHenry County since ' the March primaries. < Percy, waging a fierce ^senatorial battle against ^Democrat Paul Simon, officially 'opened Howard Electronics .Saturday afternoon. * - Speaking to reporters, he went 'on the defensive about rstatements he made on the -school prayer issue. Last week, Percy told a gathering of Jewish voters that children of minority religions should "face reality" about prayers in public schools. He said the comment was an an swer to a statement made by Simon. Simon has campaigned against institutional public school prayer, Percy said, telling crowds about a Jewish student who had to leave a classroom when audible prayers were said. Percy said he did not believe children of minority religions should be "sheltered ' from the beliefs of the majority. He also responded to a radio advertisement condemming him for voting down rehabilitation programs for the disabled. « "The (radio) foots are ab solutely wrong," Percy said "I have supported steadily and constantly (programs for the) handicapped. Irs a red herring," he sajd. Percy's comments were made following a tour of ttie elec tronics Business. Among the federal, state and local Republican officials who also attended were U.S. 12th Dist. Rep. Phil Crane, state Rep. Jack Scnaffer (R-Cary), state Rep. Jill Zwick (R-Dundee) and Crystal Lake Mayor Carl Weh- de.. Hie party is "gearing up harder, quicker" this year, compared to the 1982 cam paigns, because of the presidential race, he said. An influx of new volunteers, he added, will boost the number of telephone calls made to residents from party telephone banks in Crystal Lake.
