SECTION 2 - PAGE 6• PLAINDEALER HERALD, WEDNESDAY.OCTOBER 31.19S4 Volo Bog has new display of typical wetland habitat A unique wetland habitat display in the visitor center at the Volo Bog State Natural Area, In- gleside, was recently completed as a result of a $2,000 donation to the conservation department's "Helping Our Parks' Endeavors" program. The donation was made by Northrop Corporation's Defense Systems Division in Roll ing Meadows. The lighted exhibit, geared to helping school groups and other v i s i t o r s u n d e r s t a n d t h e significance and value of wetland areas rnd their inhabitants, is set into a wall of the visitor center. Lifeline representation of wetland flur; and fauna, including cat tails, water lilies, ferns, herons, raUs and various mammals, are seen with a background painting of a typical midwest wetland. Constructed by Volo Bog Site Superintendent Tim Kielar and In terpreter Alexia Trzyma with the aid of local volunteers, the display can be viewed from$~a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. weekends and most holidays. The state natural area, which has been designated by the U.S. Department of the In terior as a National Natural Land mark, and is dedicated as an Il linois Nature Preserve, is located n o r t h e a s t o f M c H e n r y o n Brandenburg Road. Steve Gonzalez, coordinator of t h e H e l p i n g O u r P a r k s ' Endeavors program, said, "This wetlandhabitat display exists on ly because of the Northrop Cor poration's desire to become in volved in a project that will benefit Illinois' citizens." Helping Our Parks' Endeavors was instituted by the conservation department last year as a means of encouraging Illinois citizens and corporations to purchase or donate items of all kinds that the d e p a r t m e n t n e e d s , b u t c a n ' t a f ford to buy. • ' . i Since its inception, the Helping Our Parks' Endeavors program has received donations ranging from cash and equipment to volunteer labor, from such diverse sources as campfire girls, c o r p o r a t i o n s , s p o r t s m e n ' s organizations, women's clubs and individual doqors. Among items contributed to the 'Annie' benefit night set The Townsquare Players of Woodstock will give a benefit per formance of "Annie" at 8:15 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8 for Turning PoinJ, Inc., an agency which pro vide! services to people involved in family violence. Perhaps the largest equipment gift to date was a pair of hayracks and a farm tractor given last sum mer by Charles Reed of Rockford. The vehicles are in use at Rock Cut State Park. Cash contributions have ranged from a few dollars to $2,000, most of which were given for a specific purpose, such as a $50 gift to pur chase a park bench in memory of a donor's relative, $75 from a sportsman's club to buy fingerling walleye for stocking in Lake Le- Agua-Na, and a $50 donation for a trail sign and display case by the Roadside Naturalists Nature Club of Mt.
