Black humor? There's plenty of that here, including s teach- er who sleeps in class so often that when he dies, nobody notices it for three periods Preachy dialogues? Well, someone hss to balance out the absurd events with a little logic, a touch of idealism, a cheer lor the ol' slms mater Nick Nolle gets that assign ment Years ago he was a radi cal teacher (he thought stu dents went to school to receive , an education), but now he suffers from "burnout." a pecuBar form of apathy arising tram overwork, undsrpey and the lack of consequential rosutts. So whan a former slu- dsnt sues the school because tie graduated without the abili ty lo road or write, the diploma miR starts to rock. Jobeth WMiams plays a more successful graftjate of the school who returns as the lawyer for the student. Her conversations with Nolte have aN the spsrkle ol a 10th-grade paper on civics. More effective are the reistionships between the leachers and the students, especially the one between Ralph Maccmo and Nolte. Macchio is great as a street wise kid who's on his way toward illiteracy, but who could be a leader it someone cared "Teachers" has a lot to otter, il it could only decide H it wanted to be a satire or a humanist comedy a la "To Sir. With Love." The two different Styles almost cancel each other out. but Nolte. Macchio and especially a f«e bit of tarce by Richard Mulligan give "Teachers" a passing grade ©i
