Have you contemplated the great issues of the day? Nuclear arms. Central America. Budget deficits. Taxation. Ronald Reagan's snappy salute. Tne shape of Walter Mondale's nose. As a public service, I will provide you with a short, multiple-choice Presidential Pre-Election Quiz to deter mine your readiness. Should you answer every question quickly and correctly, you know you can be sure of yourself in the voting booth. If you fail miserably, who cares? Millions vote on the nose-salute issue, anyway. Sharpen your No. 2 lead pencils and begin. (The use of pens is prohibited. Also, no cheating. Violators will be ineligible to vote Tuesday. And I will think less of you in the morning.) 1) Just what the heck is this election all about? a. That's a good question. b. Five McHenry County lawyers and 30 from Lake County are seeking candidacy for three or possibly four vacancies for the position of Associate Judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit, comprising Lake and McHenry counties. Those from McHenry County who have submitted ap plications for the positions in clude Richard Kelly of Crystal Lake, former assistant state's attorney and former associate judge; Gail Moreland of Woodstock, assistant state's attorney for McHenry County; Frank Rhode Jr., of McHenry, public defender for McHenry County; Thomas Schermerhorn of Woodstock, and Mary K. Taradash, of McHenry, both lawyers in county law firms. " According to Chief Judge of the Circuit Jack Hoogasian, members of the general public and members of the bar associations of McHenry and Lake counties are given until Nov. 12to comment favorably or unfavorably on the applicants. Lake County candidates in clude John Baumgartner of Grayslake, Eileen Cairns of Schaumburg, Larry Clark of Mundelein, Barry Cohen of Highland Park, Michael Fritz of Gurnee and Michael Fusz of Fox Lake. Other applicants are Donald Geiger of/Gurnee, William Holmquist of Gurnee, Claudia Hoogasian of Lake Forest, Sarah Lessman of Waukegan, Charles Maley of Lake Bluff, Lake Villa, Max Sherman Deerfield; Michael Sieman of Liber ty ville, Michael Simkin of Highland Park, Bob Smith Jr. of Deerfield, Peter Staben of Waukegan, Stephen Walter of Prairie View and Ludolph Wilson of Waukegan. Hoogasian said that persons wishing to comment on the applicants may address their communications to him at Lake County Courthouse, 18 N. County St., Waukegan, 111. 60085. Raymond of Lake County McKoski of Lindenhurst The remaining applicants include Michael Melius, William Nemanich and Benedict Ori, all Waukegan, Joan Pantsios of Highwood, Alan Pearlman of Deerfield, Debra Rade of Highland Park, Norman Reese of Ingleside, John Schultz of Cardiac rehab program open The Lake Region YMCA and Northern Illinois Medical Center (NIMC) have a continuing exer cise program for Cardiac Phase 111 and High Risk Cardiac in dividuals. The program is run at the YMCA at 6 a.m.on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The class is monitored by specially trained registered nurses and is developed by cardiovascular specialists. Anyone who feels they are* qualified or would like more in formation about the program should contact Kathy Spyrnal at the Northern Illinois Medical Center (815) 344-5400. If any of the communications contain any particular charge against an applicant, that ap plicant will be given the op portunity to appear before the judges to answer the charges, Hoogasian said. Each applicant has the op portunity of a personal con ference with the judges to discuss qualifications, he said. On Dec. 3, after the new cir cuit judges have been sworn, they will sit as a committee of the whole and select from the applications on file twice as . many names of qualified can didates as there are vacancies. The chief judge will then certify the names of the chosen candidates to the director of the . administrative office of the Illinois Courts. Hoogasian said that on receipt of the ballot and related materials from the director, each circuit judge will cast a secret ballot reflecting personal choices and return it to the director of the administrative office,, who win tally the ballots and announce the results.
