Pmge 19 • PLAIN DEALER HERALD. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER », MM Sports Warriors,Ludwig seek return to form By Chris Juzwik Plotndoolor-Herald sport* editor The McHenry' basketball Warriors. They're coming off a 10- 15 season. Six regulars have graduated. Only three letterwin- ners return. , But is Coach Ken Ludwig con cerned? Not really. ."This is the quickest team we've had in about eight or nine years/' Ludwig said. "The last team this quick was 1976-77." In addition, McHenry will be able to collectively return to its pressing, aggressive, running self after a year of concentrating on the inside game. "We had to go inside last season" Ludwig said. "We had Corey Scott (6-4) and Mark Peter son, (6-6), and when you have those big players, you like to use them. But it was a matter of setting up and waiting for them to come down the floor. From that stand point, it was different for Us. It's not really our style. We have a hard time executing a half-court game." Ludwig's style is more suited to his 1984-85 Warriors. "These kids believe in the press. Transition is what we want. This group will hus tle their tails off. They're really hard workers." LUDWIGr entering his 18th season, said the Warriors should be a scrappy, exciting bunch to watch:"They really go after it." The Warriors will have to do just that to overcome a glaring lack of height. J.R. Wright, at 6-3, will open at center. Nor will the Warriors be as deep a team as the veteran coach would prefer. "We won't be as deep as you would like. We won't have eight or nine kids that can play. More like five or six." But that handful includes retur ning senior starters Pat Dunne, Craig Hill and Scott Freund, a nucleus which has Ludwig smil ing. . HE IS also high on Junior Joe Tonyan, a sharpshooting guard, junior Wright and senior Chris Anderson. "Last year with the two big guys, we saw a lot of zone (defense). Teams sagged back on them and forced us to shoot from the outside, which we didn't do real well." The 1983-84 Warriors shot a dismal'41 percent from the floor. "This year, we'll probably see v more man-to-man. I hope we do. Because guys like Tonyan and Freund -- they can hurt you. They can really pop the net when they get hot. We'll need those two and Hill to hit the shots if we see a lot of zone." *' m' . * v *• 4 ̂ McHenry lost the services of 6-6 Bill Baehne, a junior whose family moved to Wonder Lake, putting him in the Woodstock School . district. Baehne helped lead last - year's McHenry sophomore squad to a 14-9 mark. He will be a junior for the Blue Streaks this season. "He's a big, strong kid with huge hands -- like meathooks," described Ludwig. "Yeah, we could have used him up front." INSTEAD, the Warriors will have to make do with a front line that averages just 6-2. Hill is 6-1 and Dunne 6-2 to go along with the 6-3 Wright. "I'm not positive who we'll start yet," Ludwig said last week. Freund will be at the point, Dunne at a forward, Wright at center. «$Hill will play either guard or for ward, depending on whether Lud wig employs Tonyan at the other guard, or Anderson opposite Dunne at a forward slot. H B* Preview McHenry scored over 70 points only twice last season. "That bothers me a little," Ludwig ad mitted. "But our press has to get us points. Last year, with the big guys, the only pressing we could do was a 2-2-1. Now, we can go man-to-man or zone. If our press is successful, it has to help us put points on the board." The Warriors should feature a balanced attack, according to Ludwig. "I don't have any plans for one kid to score a lot of points." Ludwig said additional help could come from junior Bob Nolan ("a real scrapper") and senior Mark Etheridge. "It's his (Etheridge's) first time out since freshman year. He could help us in the post. He's a strong kid." McHENRY finished third in the Fox Valley Conference last season with a 6-6 mark. According to Lud wig, anything can happen -- and will -- in the topsy-turvy FVC. ^ "I can honestly say any one of five or six teams can win the con ference. It's the most balanced Fox Valley Conference ever. There's no team that stands out." What about McHenry? "If we play up to our potential, we'll be right there," he said. "It will be a real dogfight.". Leading the pack, Ludwig said, will be Dundee-Crown. "They look awful tough," he said of the Chargers, who return four starters. "They'll be good." Ludwig said he also believes Woodstock will be involved in the race, along with Crystal Lake South, Jacobs and Crystal Lake Central. "Central has a lot of size, but 1 don't know if they have the guards. South will be fundamen tally good, and Jacobs has the best player in the league in Mark Slimko." But, Ludwig noted, "we'll be there, too." IN ADDITION to the ex cruciating schedule in the FVC, the Warriors will, as usual, play a strong non-conference slate. ' Ludwig said the Warriors' play "year in and year out, the best schedule in the conference." McHenry begins the season Tuesday night at the Rockford Boylan Tournament, with a field that includes only last year's Class AA state champion (Si meon) and runner-up (Evanston). Also involved will be St. Rita, Grant, Rockford Guilford, Mendel Catholic and the host school. "It's an interesting tournament. All the schools are guaranteed four games. We could get blown out in all four, but like I told the kids, we're gonna find out how we can play with the bigs right away," Ludwig said. OTHER non-conference opponents include Grayslake, Grant, Round Lake, Fremd, Waukegan West and Deerfield. The first regular season contest is Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Grayslake. The WfcrrioiV home opener is Saturday, Dec. 1 against Grant. The FVC season will commence on Friday, Dec. 7 at Central. (815)344-1117 Rt. 12 A Rt. 120Volo, IL For Christmas U|OW\ FREE ™ Poinsettias!
