K ' * • ' ' I- Can you believe basketball Is here already? Not the ball itself, I I mean, but the games and stuff. Pretty unbelievable. Marian Cen tral has just finished playing football, and McHenry and * Uohnsburg are about to play their first hoop contests of the season. • ' ' * *• Basketball, in its own way, is more pure than football. First of -111, you can get a lot closer to the action, and can better see what's I going on. And the fast nature of basketball is really important to *my viewing habits And there's one more important thing: the basketball wardrobe. •Zm Trivial? Perhaps. But to a veteran viewer of basketball games I-and their intricacies, the wardrobe can make a player. HAVING SPENT AN overwhelming amount on the bench wat- Iphing my teams perform, I can honestly call myself a basketball * connoisseur. From scattered backboards to halfcourt shots, - technicals to half-court traps, I've seen it all. Z- And by far, the most important facet of a game -- and its par ticipants -- is the mode of dress. Following are a few fashion tips -Jlesigned to transform the everyday basketball Joe into a center- 'fold for Basketball Weekly. THE COACH: The wardrobe is a basic one. There aren't a lot of variations. It's sport coat and tie, nice slacks, dress shoes. The ; sport coat can be shed in favor of a sweater, providing the only real departure. Assistant coaches are included in this description. Female coaches have more flexibility. Slacks or a dress can be worn, whichever proves most comfortable. ' THE REFEREE: This outfit is similarly boring. Black pants, ; black shoes. Silver whistle. Black-and-white shirt. Anything el.*e ; • could cause havoc, and create the upstaging of the most important -; and dapper of all basketball Beau Brummels -- THE PLAYER: The warm-ups must include pants and a jacket. Hoods on jacket are optional, and ever wearing the hood is of •; course forbidden. * Another intriguing sidebar to the warm-up: it's the only part of the apparel which is named after a specific part of the game. There's no such thfag as wearing a jump ball or a free throw. .Keeping the warm-ups on during warm-ups is mandatory. Realistically, when else would it make sense to wear them? Modeling them during introductions is generally a pretty cool thing to do. * . Then we get to shoes. There are the guys who might not get a lot of minutes on the floor, but if they've got cool shoes, they're OK in . my book. . The shoes that probably have the most impact are the ones with natural-colored stripes. Very low-key. IN BASEBALL and football, shoes are covered by mud or dirt, but in basketball, if your shoes are ugly, there's nowhere to hide. Shoes run the gamut from the popular Converse Chuck Taylor canvas jobs, which are now worn on a more faddish level, to the super-tough 'air' brands, which I assume allow your feet to breathe better. Just guessing, of course, because my feet always had asthma. The outer footwear is meaningless without socks -- another basketball fashion essential. Rules for sock wear are simple: They must match, and they must sag. . ' If your socks are pulled up too high, they'll, look too much like . legwarmers. No reasoji to open yourself up to ridicule. UNTUCKED SHIRTS? Definitely not good. Have son! class. . Have a little pride in your school -- and your seamstress. Unless your have the jerseys which are designed for the casual, * careless look, leave that thing tucked in. . Tugging on the legs of the shorts while catching a breath is very [appealing. Wiping sweat off the brow with the strap on the jersey is another stylish maneuver. • And above all, always remember and never forget, consistency in basketball wear, as in life, is the goal. - So once you have these tips down pat -- don't change. ---- Not this time Amboy crushes Marian Central title * V* BySamNatrop . PtaindMtor-ltorald Now* Service AMBOY - It's over. One of the two longest winning streaks in Illinois High School football came to a bitter end on a crisp Saturday afternoon in Amboy. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the clouds, which were present throughout the game, grew darker and drooped as the minutes became scarce during the IHSA semifinal game. For all intents and purposes, it was over when Dennis Ely scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 4:44 showing on the clock. At that point, the state championship-bound Clippers led, 36-19, and Marian Central would need three possessions in the final four minutes to pull out a miracle. The Hurricanes did manage a 5-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the contest, but that score did little but close to the gap. Amboy 36, Marian Central 27. It's over. THE Hurricanes, whose winning string ended at 24, were victimized by their playoff nemesis - getting out of the blocks slowly - for the third straight game. the Clippers, who jumped to a 15-0 lead m the first 8:13 of the game, made that third time the charm. "It seems typical of our team," a dejected, yet ever- gracious Marian Coach Don Penza said. "We tend to come out a little slow. But 15 points shouldn't have affected us. We have the offensive capability to score that and much more. "Today, though, we didn't get the points in time." Amboy, now 12-0, used the big play (and two more-than- fortunatebounces) to advance to Friday's championship game against Paxton, a winner over Maroa-Forsyth in Saturday's other semifinal. "The big play helped us all year," a drained Clipper Coach Don Wyzgowski said after the contest. "When the chips were down and we needed something the guys came through. Today was just another example of that. Amboy showed the ability to control the ball with its powerful running trio of cousins Brian and Dennis Ely and fullback Montovan that ground out 193 yards on the ground including 105 in the first quarter. Marian, on the other hand, picked up just 94 yards on the ground, and Powers, who was on the run most of the day, com pleted ll-of-28 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He was sacked five times for mintis- 41 yards and was intercepted once. AND despite the Statistic Plaindealer-Herald photo by Chris Juzwik Marian's Andy Hartlieb (front) and Chris Brown check the scoreboard in the waning moments of Marian's 36-27 loss to Am boy in the IHSA Class 2A semifinals. Three plays later, Dennis Ely went to the four. However a quarterback sack, and three fine defensive plays causing in completed passes gave the Hurricanes the two most prized possessions of the game: the football and the momentum. But it lasted only six seconds: ON MARIAN'S first play from the 12, Dan Fortin was hit by three Clippers and the ball was jarred loose. Amboy's Mark Hassler fell on the fumble at the 20 with 4:02 left in the period. "We made some mistakes. First the fumble after we had on fourth down,' the game's turning t some people in flaying zone and some playing' man-to-man (pass defense). If we stop them there, if we don't fumble, we looked like we were ready to play the football we're supposed to." Penza said his team's offense "wasn't relaxed at all," and added that the absence of Andy Hartlieb from his fullback spot was a key loss. "Whenever you lose a good ball player, it's bound to affect your team one way or another," Penza said. HARTLIEB suffered a deep bruise to his right ankle during the quarterfinal victory over Polo. When asked if he was disappointed the losing streak came to an end, Penza said, "Oh, we have to be happy with 11-1 (record). To win 24 games in a row against the type of competition we play is a credit to the kids. But, yes, it's a let down. You can't help but feel a little down."
