2 - PLAIN DEALER HERALD. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER M. 1*4 \ : • ! • Consumers cai| play POPs game as well by June Fuller Dear June: I was recently at tracted to a mail-in offer on the label of a bag of Tidy Cat 3. It said, "Save $2.20 - details inside." 1 have been buying Tidy Cat for some time now and I had saved quite a few of the proof-of- purchase seals. • imagine my surprise when 1 opened the box and discovered International Christmas Margaret (Peg) Boartni places a foreign flag on the Christmas tree as she rehearses for the annual holiday program of the McHenry Choral Club, based on the theme, "It's a Small World." Curtain time is 8:15 p.mM Dec. 1 and 2, at the McHefry West Campus auditorium. Tickets are available from members and will be sold at the door. Coupon Clipper that the $2.20 offer required several Universal Product Codes as "proofs of purchase.1' Why does the company bother to print the proof-of-purchase seals on the box if they don't ask for them? Rightly or wrongly, I feel misled and Tidy Cat 3 goes on my "phooey" list. - Nelle Bullock, Stuart, Fla. Dear Nelle: Many years ago, before refunding became the popular comsumer sport that it is today, the manufacturers used to ask for aU kinds of proofs-of- purchase and it was often confus ing. To end the confusion, we con sumers told manufacturers that we wanted one standard, easily recognizable proof of purchase. Thus was born the proof-of- purchase seal (POP seal) that most companies print on their packages. Unfortunately, the appearance of the POP seal made it apparent to many of the manufacturers that consumers were collecting them to use of future offers; this made the manufacturers very un comfortable. The manufacturers how had to » decide what to do about all those consumers who were saving their POP Seals. Several companies began to print special POP Seals for each of their offers, and the sides of some cereal boxes began to look like road signs. Other com panies have taken a grin-and- bear-it attitude, and although they FIFTY YEARS AGO Taken from the files of Nov. 22, 1934) Ray McGee, clerk of McHenry ownship, was elected president f the newly-organized McHenry ;ounty Road Officials association t a meeting in the courthouse, Woodstock, Thursday evening, "he purpose of the association is aid in advancement of good oads in the county and is against lounty road officials association organized T wice Told Tales tie abolishment of township overnment. Schmitt has been transferred from Camp Shelby, Miss., to New York. Glenn Draper has been transfer red from Camp Haan, Calif., to Camp Howze, Texas. Local radio fans have reported that one day last week they heard Miss Margaret O'Gara, former teacher in the McHenry High School, on a broadcast over WIND. She won $115 in war bonds for answering the question, "Who was the composer of the"Flight of the Bumblebee.' " TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the fiie»-of Nov. 19, 1959) . t: < At the District 15 elementary school board meeting, the board opened bids for the excavation and foundation work for the new kindergarten through fifth grade school, which will be located on the Weber property on Pistakee Bay Road. Joseph Frett of McHenry was low bidder and was awarded the contract for $13,451. The need for expansion was reflected in the statement that eight rooms of the 10-room building will be filled as soon as the doors are opened. September 1960 occupancy is planned. James M. Lennon, treasurer of McHenry Hospital, accepted a $2,000 donation from Mrs. Fred Dradinardo and Mrs. Fred Bond, treasurer and president of the in stitution's Women's Auxiliary. The gift was the last of three payments on the groups $6,000 pledge to the hospital's building fund drive held in 1957. Winners in the "Crazy Hat" con test sponsored by the McHenry County women's division of cerebral palsy were shown wear ing their creations. Deanne Hester, was awarded first prize in the lady's division for having the most original hat, while Albert Stilling won similar honors in the men's division for the most unusual hat. A total of $1,290 was realized from the event. Walter Webb and Danny Weber led the major league bowlers at McHenry Recreation last Wednes-t day night. Weber rolled games of 239.214 and 221 while Webb scored lKqftd and 266. TEN YEARS AGO (laken from the files of Nov. 20, r 1974) In a tribute to the two-year emergency medical service record of McHenry Hospital's trauma center, the president of the hospital's board of directors cited the willingness of 19 primary-care medical specialists to commit themselves to a 24-hour schedule of on-call service. "The regional Emergency Medical Service plan for McHenry County and Western Lake County has depended on the dedication of the McHenry Hospital staff to answer the call of Emergency Medical Service physicians for consultation and supportive ser vice at all hours of the day or night, all year-round," stated LeRoy Olsen, president of the McHenry Hospital board of direc tors. He pointed out that McHenry Hospital had committed itself to providing basic service and hd an Emergency Medical Service physician in its emergency room at all times. Robert Thornton, leader of a Master Educational plan group for District 15, presented a report on its status at the district board meeting last week. Terry An- finson was named chairperson of the General Education subcom mittee; Dorothy Kuta, Special Services; and Bill Landis, Ad ministrative.. _ $360,000 was budgltlB foPiJffe- tal health purposes in the county and allocated by the McHenry County 708 board. Members of the board this year included Rev. James Bidle, Arnold N. May (chairman), Dr. August Rosetti, Homer Barry, Charles Stone and the Rev. Marx Jones. know tha t many o f t he i r customers collect the seals, their offers continue to ask for them. But other manufacturers decided that if consumers were going to "play games" with the POP seals, they would ignore them and play games, too. When maufacturers play the POP game, they usually say to themselves something like this; 'Tor the last few offers, we have asked for net weight statements, let's change the requirements on new offers to Universal Product Codes." When consumers play the POP game, they have to consider how much of the product packaging they can comfortably keep so that no matter what the manufacturer asks for, they will have it. I wouldn't put Tidy Cat 3 on your "phooey" list. The manufacturer has joined the POP game, so why don't you just do the same?
