I SUCTION 2 - PAGE 2 - PLAINDEALER HERALD. FRIDAY , NOVEMBER 23,1984 Q FIHL TOWN Volunteer corn problem has increased A volunteer corn plant stands out like a sore thumb in a soybean field. Unfortunately, this "un wanted" crop was abundant statewide this year and McHenry County had its share. In service Plalndealer Herald photo by Anthony Oliver The (EXTENSION) People AMml McHenry Township Fire Department's new aerial ladder truck is now in service. Sixteen firefighters from the district spent three months in an in tensive training course, prior to the vehicle being placed into service. Housed at the district fire house in McHenry, the aerial truck is equipped with a 100-foot steel ladder and platform, 1,250 gallon-per-mlnute pump and an assortment of ground ladders. Prairieland display will be at Volo Bog "The Tallgrass Prairie: An American Landscape," a two-part exhibition dealing with a uniquely- American natural ecological com munity, will be on view Nov. 24 through Dec. 23 at Volo Bog State Natural Area, northeast of McHenry in Lake County. The display, provided by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and funded by a grant from the Insitute of Museum Services, features photos-most in color-and other il lustrations of the tallgrass prairie environment. Many of the cap tions were developed from quotes taken from dairies, notes, and other writings of early explorers of North America, from Coronado to Lewis and Cloark. A series of special programs, lectures and demonstrations highlighting various aspects of the Illinois prairie will be held in conjunction with the exhibition, on a schedule to be announced. According to Alexia Trzyna, in terpreter at Volo Bog, the first part of the display focuses on historic aspects of the prairie. The second half, entitled "The Prairie Today," provides a glimpse of life in the vanishing environment and documents the kinds of events that have taken place there, the people who have lived there, the natural phenomena that have created or shaped the prairie, and the wildlife inhabiting such areas. At one time, Trzyna said, tallgrass prairieland covered 250 million acres within the area bounded by Canada, Texas, Kan sas and Indiana. It was inhabitedk first by Indians, and explored lat^r by European and American adventurers, beginning in the 16th century. The prairie ultimately became the focal point of the homestead movement and in relatively short order was taken over by settlers because of its ex tremely fertile soil. Many of the grasses, found only in the prairie environment, have survived since the ice ages, but the eco-system nonetheless is a fragile one that is difficult to restore to its original state once it has been disturbed, Trzyna ex plained. Though man has bred numerous new strains of grasses, the prairie species remain the ideal forms for that environment, she said. Always subject to natural threats and changes, such as ero sion and the encroachment of woody vegetation, the prairies survived for millions of years without major transformation un- t i l t h e a r r i v a l o f t h e homesteaders, ranchers, farmers and community builders, Trzyna noted. Volo Bog State Natural Area is one and a half miles west of Route 12 on Brandenburg Road, just north of Volo. For further information on the exhibition or the sitet call (815) 344-1294, or write in care of Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Rd., Ingleside, IL 60041. The problem varies each year depending upon the amount of ear and shelled corn loss in the preceding crop. If the loss is low, the volunteer corn problem can be minimized. With more corn- soybean rotation and less tillage, however, the problem of volunteer corn has increased. Tillage can play a large part in the control of volunteer corn. Research conducted in 1980 show ed that fall moldboard plowing before the 1980 crop year reduced volunteer corn populations by ap proximately 90 percent. A fall chisel operation that same year reduced the corn population by ap proximately 80 percent. With the need for soil conservation, however* many farmers are rightfully moving toward less tillage. They will, therefore, have to rely on other methods of con- trol. In most cases, this will be herbicides. Herbicide research on volunteer corn has been conducted at the Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center near DeKalb since 1980. The work has examin ed the effectiveness of Roundup, Hoelon, Treflan, Poast, Fusilade and some experimental products as control agents. In all cases, treatment results more than paid for the costs of treatment. In fact, the various treatments used in the studies paid off up to 10 times their investment cost. The volunteer corn population was reduced by 75 to 100 percent and the /com grain yield was reducedJby 80 to 100 percent in all but theVTreflan plots. In addition, the soybean yield was increased from six to 12 bushels per acre over an untreated check plot. While it has been thought that treatment for volunteer corn with a dinitroaniline herbicide will pre vent any corn that grows from set ting an ear, the studies with Treflan showed that some plants were still able to produce graife> The use of Treflan reduced corn population and corn yield from 50 to 90 percent. Another good reason for treating soybeans for volunteer corn is to keep the soybean crop free of foreign matter and excess moisture. Growers can suffer a price dockage at the elevator when these two conditions are pre sent in the beans. McHenry man hurt in accident A McHenry man and a Naperville couple were injured in a two-car accident south of Woodstock Sunday, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Department. Police said the accident oc curred when the McHenry man swerved his vehicle to avoid a deer. John J. Mohapp, 4415 Giant Oaks, McHenry, told police he was northbound on Route 47 near Hercules Koad when he saw a deer in the roadway. He then swerved his car into the southbound lane to avoid the deer and struck an oncoming car occupied by Richard C. Hanson, 61, and Nancy A. Hanson, 51, of Naperville, ac cording to reports. All three were taken to Memorial Hospital, Woodstock, by the Woodstock Rescue Squad after the 5:30 p.m. collision. ^Servk:ENAL DIRECTORY JACK WALSH, AGENT EARL R. WALSH.
