At such a time, it is fitting to reflect on the Bible's contributions to the institutions, traditions, and cultural values that underlie our country's liberty. Scholars agree that the founding concepts of Western Civilization and democracy are drawn from the Bible, which is, at the saihe time, a guide to public and individual fulfillment. For a guide to personal faith, many Americans turn directly to the Bible. Most who read the Bible hear in it the Word of God. Its story of ancient Israel and of early Christian believers in spires them in looking to the future. For them, the Bible is a book in whose plot they still have a part. Its promises, they believe, embrace the people of all nations. During the terrible struggle of the Civil War, President Lincoln observed, "That the Almighty does make use of -touman agencies, and directly in tervenes in human affairs, is one 'Messiah* concert slated if the plainest statements in the Mble." | The meaning to the Bible must known and understood if it is td make a difference in our lives, \d I urge all Americans to read ann study the Scriptures. The rewards of such efforts will help preserve our heritage of freedom and signal the message of liberty to people in all lands. The music department of the First Congregational Church in Crystal Lake will present the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah, |rith soloists, or chestra and chorus, Sunday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. in the main sanctuary at 461 Pierson Street. The performance is under the direction of Eva Wedel, minister of music. The vestry choir will sine the choral sections. A free will offering will be taken to benefit the purchase of a 1912 Steinway grand piano for the use in the main sanctuary. The strument and the sanctuary presently available for rent fbr concerts and recitals. DRASTIC STOCK 0 FURNISH YOUR HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS NOW!
