Page 2PLA1NDEALER HER ALP, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23,1984 Opinion/Politics Needed: a consumer advocate Now that we're down to the bones on the Thanksgiving turkey, we'll be expecting to learn that all the fun had eating it wasn't really so enjoyable after all. As he has in the past, Ralph Nader, consumer advocate extraordinaire, will tell us that what We ate had a lot of nasty contaminants that may stir up a M usin' &, anderin BY KAF good amount of trouble inside us. In other words, we only thought we were having fun as we tasted the turkey and stuffed the stuffing into a stomach yearning for a treat. Nr. Nader is a well-meaning gentleman but we think he's forgetting the real problems trembling the public. He's telling us we aren't en joying the things that we know delight us. We want him to tackle the tasks that we hate on a daily basis. Consider those markings on the roadways that try to guide us in turning. Some display a huge arrow in the right lane, indicating the driver can turn right or continue straight ahead. Another in tersection shows the arrow in the left lane and tells us we can go left or straight while the right may turn right only. The painted signs on the pavement are easily read when there are no encumbrances, but in heavy traffic in a city where the driver is proceeding in unfamiliar surroundings, they play havoc with any kind of timetable for travel. Try looking for a place to turn when you find yourself in the wrong lane with a long line of cars behind and beside you. Another problem spot for Mr. Nader occurs at some of our leading supermarkets. Even the post office makes one wonder whether he's in the United States or jolly old England. "Push," it says on the left door as we leave the office. Why are they confusing us? We were taught that as we drive or walk we should stay on the right side. Then why are we pushing another postal customer into the wrong lane in an effort to get out? And why do automatic door openers in some markets let you in on the left side and bar your entrance in others? Again, where have you been, consumer advocate? But of all problems to which he has shut his eyes, the worst is the matter of opening bottles and other containers. We consider our self strong, with the ability to follow a Your Legislators State Senator Jack Schaffer (R), 32nd. 56 N. With a sluggish drain in the sink, we set about correcting the trouble. We pushed hard ana we turned hard. Nothing happened. Ten minutes later, with red hands the only evidence of our expenditure of strength, we admitted failure and used another sink until help was available. Suffering the pains of a headache would seem enough punishment for a human to bear, but added to it is the task of lining up arrows, all of which are white, and pushing off the lid. We haven't mastered this one in the daylight. Imagine the frustration experienced in the dead of night when the head throbs and relief is far away. One of the anti-cavity rinses on the market displays the simply direction: Squeeze the sides while turning to open. Turn until cap stops to close. Do you close this kind of bottle? Not on your life! What you do is put the opened container on your bathroom {e until next time, all the e gloating over the fact that you have foiled the best laid plans of the manufacturer to make you miserable. In modern jargon, Mr. Nader, "Get on the stick!" We've been suffering far too long. It's easy to think that we continue to stay in business because we work hard, or because we have some special angle, or we're special in some other way. But the fact is we're successful only because you bring your automotive needs to us. And on any given day# you're free to go elsewhere Without your continued support, we'll go out of business.
