PLA1NDEALER HERALD, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28.1984 Sports By Chris Juzwik P latndealer-Herald sports editor McHenry High School wrestling coach Jerry Rankin says he isn't real sure what to expect from his team this season. But from the start the Warrior grapplers have had thus far, it looks like he can rest easy. The young Warriors -- six sophomores, five juniors and a seniqyr wrestled at a recent meet - ae 3-1 thus far, the only loss coming at the hands of Harvard, a school with the kind of program Kankin would like. "I know people get tired of hear ing the word 'rebuilding,' but that's where we're at right now," the first-year varsity coach said. Rankin and the Warriors lost a tough 32-27 decision to Harvard at Saturday's Woodstock double dual meet. "Harvard has a good tradi tion," Rankin noted. "They really have an outstanding program." W « Y Preview undefeated in four outings this season. WARRIOR WINS were over St. Edward of Elgin (32-28) and RoCkton (54-9) at the St. Edward double dual, and Mundelein (31- 28) at the Woodstock outing. "We're a very young team," Rankin said. "We don't have many wrestlers with varsity ex perience. Our goal is to duplicate or improve upon last year's record. A "It's hard to predict how well a team will do, or how the (Fox Valley) conference shapes up." Rankin said his troops will be depleted due to the loss of Juniors Jim Shaver and Russ Bunday to injuries. Shaver injured his shoulder early in the football season and recently underwent surgery. Bunday has knee pro blems. "Our juniors are 21-1-1 over the past two years. They were 14-1 as freshmen, and 14-0-1 last year. With Bunday and Shaver, we would be much better. Without them though, we still have some real good wrestlers," Rankin said. Rankin has 55 wrestlers out for the 1984-85 campaign. "It's a good turnout. It's more than we've had in the past." ALTHOUGH Rankin Is only in his initial varsity coaching season, taking over for Marty Sobzcak, he's no stranger to this squad, having coached the War rior freshmen for three years. He sees Dundee-Crown as the team to beat in the Fox Valley race. "They've got to be the pro hibitive favorite," he said. "After Dundee-Crown, it's Woodstock, Crystal Lake Central, and McHenry. But again, it's difficult to predict." The Warriors next meet is a home battle against Warren Fri day. The freshman start things off at 6 p.m. ONE OF THE ways Rankin has tried to build McHenry's program is to improve the non-conference schedule. "We've added some better com petition," he said. "Our improved schedule won't help our dual meet record, but it will help our kids in the long run." On the non-conference slate for McHenry are Warren, Wauconda, Lake Zurich, Waukegan East, Johnsburg, Grayslake and Streamwood. "Warren has a very good pro gram, so does Grayslake," Rankin said. "We dropped some of the schools that we beat pretty easily last year." Returning from last year's 11-8 squad are junior Chris Mann at 98 pounds, and sophomore Roger March at 126. But after just one week and one dual meet, he's close to ecstatic. "We have a very young team/' Roberts said. "It's primarily juniors, with only three seniors. But five of our 'starters' are retur ning from last year. They've real ly progressed." Johnsburg opened its season last week with a double dual meet at home against Zion-Benton and Crys ta l Lake Sou th . The Skyhawks ripped the ZeeBees 37- 18, and dropped a 33-22 decision to the Gators. v Plalndealer-Herald photo McHenry's Chris Mann, shown here on top in a match last year, is one of two returning letterwinners for the Warrior wrestling team. Mann wrestles at 98 pounds. He is a Junior. Young McHenry High matmen off to good start sc* "A couple of matches against South could have gone either way. They have good people and a great coach, and even though we lost, we're happy with how we did," Roberts said. ROBERTS noted the Skyhawks have upgraded their schedule con siderably from a year ago, as the JHS schedule is loaded with meets against Fox Valley Conference teams. Of the seven schools in the FVC, five will face the Skyhawks this season. "Our schedule is much more challenging this year, and the FVC teams have been scheduled because those are the teams we meet in the regional. It's impor tant to get a taste of that competi tion during the year," Roberts ex plained. The Skyhawks were 8-8-1 in 1983, Roberts' first year as head coach. "We did much better than we had anticipated," Roberts said. "The year before that, we were dead last (in the Northwest Subur ban Conference). Last year, we were fifth. This year, the team's goal is to finish third. I think that's a realistic goal." Roberts said Grant is "heads above" the rest of the conference teams. "They're a state power," he added. "After that it's Round Lake, and then we should battle it out with Grayslake for third." HEADING THE l i s t o f returnees to the JHS mit is junior Scott Lehman, wrestling at 112 pounds. "He wrestled varsity at 112 as a sophomore. We're expec ting big things from him," Roberts said. Senior Mark Dumelle (167) is in his third varsity season. Junior Brian Hauck (145), senior Terry Eifler (119) and sophomore Jim Walker (126) round out the fivesome. Lehman and juniors Jeff Carden and Bob Bentz are undefeated thus far. Bentz, a heavyweight, is - 1-0-1. He tied in his match against a Z-B wrestler. Carden wrestles at 155 pounds. If Roberts is excited about this team, he's thrilled about what lies down the road for Johnsburg's wrestling program. "We have some excellent f reshmen and sophomore wres t l e r s . Jus t exce l l en t , " Roberts said. "Our sophomores beat Zion 63-6. Their only points came on a forfeit. "I'M REAL optimistic about this team. Our goal is to get to .500, and I think it will be quite a task to do that, with our tough schedule. But it will be challeng ing." Roberts added his team's first taste of competition this year whetted his appetite for what's to come. "If Crystal Lake South is a barometer for how well we're go ing to do, I think we're going to be OK." The Skyhawks will travel to Marengo Friday. Their next home meet is a Dec. 11 date with Hebron and Round Lake. JOHNSBURG HIGH WRESTLING 84-85 r i Nov. 30 A . . . a t Marengo Dec. 1 at Richmond Tourn. The 'Hawks dropped their season opener Tuesday to Burl ington Central 66-43 in a lackluster performance, but came back to thump Richmond-Burton Wednes day and Marian Central Friday, finishing 2-1. The Hurricanes also ended 2-1, as did Burlington Cen tral. R-B was winless in three tries. In the Marian game, Johnsburg raced off to a 12-4 first quarter lead and never 4ooked back. The advantage was raised to 28-14 at the half. V i < \ i < \ < * < < i < < < < < < 4i ( < < * ' { \ < * < " < < _ < - SANTA'S GIFT SHOP At Harms Farm 4727 W. Crystal Lk. Rd.
