WEDNESDAY , NOVEMBER 28, mt Sports log ' YMCA hoop league set CRYSTAL LAKE -- The Lake Region YMCA is signing up par ticipants for its Youth Basketball Program during November. The Y basketball program is for boys and girls in grades one through eight. The season starts Sunday, Dec. 2 and continues for 11 weeks through March 3. Y Basketball is an alternative where winning is only one among other important goals, where the players come first and the sport se cond, and where all athletes are encouraged to have fun and develop positive sport attitudes for life. The Y basketball philosophy centers around participation, fun, fitness, teamwork and fair play. The teams are made up of nine players in the four leagues: first and second grades, third and fourth, fifth and sixth, and seventh and eighth. Each league is limited to 54 players, so early sign-up is en couraged. For further information, call 459-4455. «f Pigtail fundraiser Dec. 8 JOHNSBURG -- The board of the Johnsburg Pigtail League has announced plans for a fundraiser in order to defray league costs dur ing the season. • The fundraiser will allow the league to keep the registration fee in tact, with no raises. Moore of McHenry and a student in the Aircraft Pilot Training program at Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in Waco, recently competed in the regional team champion competition of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (Safecon '84 Safety Convention) at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. Bradley, a 1982 graduate of McHenry High School, placed fifth in Simulation. •** • ,> -- , , The ll-man team received 21 individual awards, as well as placing* second overall andlhird in ground events. The TSTI team competed against eight senior colleges and three junior colleges. The squad wilftravel to Ohio State University in the spring to compete in the national event. Warrior cagers find wealth of experience McHenry High's basketball team may have lost all four games it played in the Rockford Boylan Tournament over the Thanksgiv ing holiday, but Coach Ken Lud- wig isn't the least bit discouraged by his squad's performance. "Disappointed? Heavens no," the veteran coach said Monday. "We maybe didn't play as well as we could or should have, but the competition was very tough." Tough indeed. The Warriors fac ed an exceptional Boylan team in the tourney's opener, and Satur day battled defending state runner-up Evanston. "We played Boylan and Evanston very tough. Played well against them both." The Warriors were handed a 63-49 loss to Boylan, and a 58-47 defeat by the Wildkits. "In the games against (Rockford) Guilford and Grant, we let up. I hope our loss to Grant is going to be our worst game of the year," Ludwig said. IF A star -- or two -- emerged for Ludwig's Warriors during the Boylan event, it was seniors Scott Freund and Craig Hill. Point guard Freund tallied 74 points for the tournament, an average of over 18 per contest. "Scott played real well offen sively," Ludwig said. "So did Craig Hill." Forward Hill had 21 points In the Warriors' 44-38 loss to Grant, and 23 in the Evanston af fair. Freund tallied 33 in the Guilford game -- which McHenry lost by just one, 61-60 -- and 22 against Evanston. Ludwig said the Warriors need to improve on getting the ball in side more. "We don't have a real big team, but you still have to have an inside game. Our post players (center J R. Wright and forward Pat Dunne) just didn't get any shots. Any when they did, they couldn't score," Ludwig said. "We have to work on that." THE McHENRY mentor said his team didn't appear to be in timidated against the bigger, more aggressive Boylan and Evanston teams. "They were just rebounding over our backs," Ludwig explain ed. "And as little as we are, that's going to happen. We screened out well against them." Ludwig was, however, puzzled by his team's lethargic play against the "weaker teams." "We've got to develop more con sistency, and we've got to get more scoring from up front." The Warriors' defensive efforts pleased their coach. "Look at the scores. I'm very happy with our defense. Nobody's as small as we are" Ludwig said the first endeavor into the Boylan tournament was a positive one. "It's a good way to start off. We're definitely going to go back," he said. THE Warriors traveled to Grayslake to battle the Rams Tuesday. The non-conference slate will continued with a home date Saturday against Grant, before opening the Fox Valley Conference season at Crystal Lake Central next Friday. "We really played poorly against Grant. But we'D be ready for them Saturday," Ludwig pro mised. The sophomore game begins at 6 p.m. at West Campus' Buckner Gym. The varsity will follow. State Farm edges Regis State Farm Insurance edged St. Regis Pub 31-29 in the evening's most exciting contest, as the 1984 Men's Park and Recreation BasketballLeague got underway. Greg Davis scored 13 second half points to lead all scorers with 17, as State Farm scored a come- from-behind victory. John Sytsma saved all eight of his points for the final two minutes to help the SFI cause. Joe Dehn led St. Regis with eight points before fouling out. Christopher's Men's Wear show ed it prowess from the free throw line, sinking 27 of 35 (77 percent) and went on to win easily. The winners led 21-9 at the half, Frank Sexton (21 points) and Willie Howard (13) both came off the bench to lead Christopher's. Brett Decker paced Murphy's with eight. It was no contest between last year's champion, Henehan and Mclntyre, and the Businessmen of Johnsburg.
