Check Christmas toys for possible hazards Ir«r manv n~mi« # *- play with it" Younger children u SECTION 2 • PAGE 9 • PLAIN DEALER HERALD, WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER St. 1*4 For many people Christmas .gift shopping is already at the "Serious" stage. Today's column is about the biggest hazard in buying Christmas gifts-selecting safe toys for children. Although there are fewer and fewer hazardous toys on the market each year, the largest number of consumer complaints : to the U.S. Consumer Product ; Safety Commission are about hazardous toys. So it is up to the buyer to use some judgement (when choosing toys. We often buy toys that appeal us rather than ones that are appropriate for the child.w An electric toy that might be safe for one eight-year-old child might be a hazardous toy in the hands of another. . Most toys are labeled to in dicate the age group for which the toy was designed- that is, "For four to seven years" or "For eight to 12 years." The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends that this information be used as a guide, remembering that that par ticular toy may not be suitable for all children in that age bracket. Keep in mind the particular child who is going to lonsumers asked to help curbing retail theft Illinois Attorney General Neil i called on consumers to store owners and law forcement officials in the ittle to curb retail theft. 'Stealing from stores has |>ecome the fastest growing prime in America," Hartigan 1 According to statistics compiled by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, retail Jheft tosts a family of four about 9400 per year in higher prices. ' "Every time an item is stolen from a store, it adds to the retail cost paid by the legitimate bonsumer. Everyone can help combat the problem. An alliance of business, law enforcement and government can have a positive impact on this monumental problem," Har tigan said. Retail theft denies sales tax revenues to state and local governments and adds to the tremendous cost of our criminal justice system, he added. The attorney general also urged consumers to protect themselves during the holiday season because the next few weeks are the peak period for theft. "When you are doing your holiday shopping, be more aware that the criminals are shopping also," Hartigan said. "Be alert so you don't become one of their bargains. Criminals who con consumers have their own seasonal traditions as well." Hartigan reminded citizens that there are several P] Ic recautions they can take to essen the chances of becoming a crime victim. "When doing your holiday shopping, remember that snatchers and pickpockc be out in force. Large, over-the- shoulder bass are the easiest target. Small, zfopered clutch i are the hardest to snatch, your wallet in an inside Let. The back pocket is the easiest to pick," Hartigan said. Try to keep your keys separate from your iden tification so if you ao become a crime victim, the theives won't have both your keys and your address. "When shopping, don't leave packages on the seat where they will be an easy target. Instead, lock them in the trunk," he said. Hartigan also said consumers should consider the benefits of purchasing items . from established retail to stores as fly-by-night in your new town. There are guidelines to remember when choosing the Keepin' Healthy: ideal toy for a very youngchild. Any tov for an infant or toddler should have smooth, round opposed operations. "Sales are nice, but be wary of sale prices that seem too good to be true. Often, they are," Hartigan said. He cautioned buyers to watch for the "b^Qk and switch" scheme. A peddler may offer a fantastic price on something he shows you and then hand you something already boxed. Sometimes the box will contain a totally different product. Annual losses to thieves in Illinois are in excess of $845 million, according to IRMA statistics. edges; no exposed pins, wires or nails; no detachable parts that could be swallowed or stuck in an ear or nostril; and no darts, arrows or missiles with sharp points. Toys for small children should not be made of glass or brittle plastic. Stuffed animals should riot have sharp wires in the ears, tails or body that can poke through the material and injure a child. And they should not have a nose, mouth, eyes or buttons that can be pulled ofl and put in the child's mouth- because that's where an infant will put them! Always inspect these items carefully before giving them to a small child to play with. Electrical toys, such as toy ovens and trains, should never be given to a child under eight. They can come in contact with water ahd short out, and they sometimes overheat. There are also some hobby supplies, such as kilns or wood-burning kits, which reach very high tem peratures and should not be used by children under 12. No matter how cute or- clever a toy is, before buying it, con sider these two questions: "Is the toy appropriate to the child's age?" "Is it a well-designed, safe toy?" This should prevent potential injuries.
