And now the Christmas drive is just around the corner. It is necessary for FISH to deliver Christmas gifts, clothing and food on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16. Residents are asked to br ing food and gifts to Saint Patrick's Church, left side door, the week of Dec. 9 through Dec. 15. That is how McHenry County College English Instructor Dora Tlppens perceives the cross- discipline approach she utilizes to make the study of Shakespeare meaningful to students of varying Interests and backgrounds. An article she wrote on the sub ject, "Crossing the Curriculum with Shakespeare," was published In the November issue of the na tional literary journal, The Shakespeare Quarterly. Tippens calculated long and hard on how to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of students and at the same time sell a course on an author with a reputation for being difficult to decipher. She came to the conclusion that crossing the disciplines would be the most ef fective means of reaching students with varying ages and goals. After coming up with a plan, she called on her colleagues at MCC to help her by relating their area of expertise to Shakespeare and his times. Psychology teacher Carol Chandler talked on the psychology of the villain. Associate Dean of Instruction Bob Frank spoke about the philosophy of death in Shakespeare's tragedies. History instructor Dave Hill informed the class about the political issues and h i s t o r i c a l a s p e c t s o f Shakespeare's time. English instructor Lorie Odegaard shared remembrances of Stratford-on-Avon and provided practical information about life during that period. Humanities and Social Science Division Chair Bob Riner brought a Shakespeare character to life for students through dramatic interpretation. Art instructor Ossie Rometo helped the class see Shakespeare in terms of his culture and made them aware of the influence of Renaissance themes. Donna Sar- vay of MCC's English Depart ment, raised contemporary ques tions about the images of women in the plays. The result of their efforts was interdisciplinary contributions ( ' Swearing-in ceremony set There will be swearing-in and robing ceremony in Courtroom 305 of the McHenry County Cour thouse, Woodstock, Dec. 3, at 3 >.m. for newly-elected Circuit ' Board Room following the beremony. Judge Henry L. Cowlin will also be sworn-in at the 3 p.m. ceremony. He successfully ran for retention as circuit judge. The public is invited to both the ceremony and reception. The teachers saw the Mppllcability of their own academic disciplines. The students recognized the univer sality of the literature as well as its appeal. The close of the semester and the end of the course found Tip- pens excited about what had transpired. "It was such a positive ex perience," Tippens recounts, "I couldn't get it out of my mind. When I found they (a national magazine) were looking for ar ticles on different ways of teaching Shakespeare, I decided to give it a try." She submitted an article of ap proximately 3,000 words describ ing how she crossed the cur riculum with Shakespeare to The Shakespeare Quarterly. It was ac cepted. "This whole topic of crossing the curriculum fits into the at tempt to foster cellence," (on a nationwide basis) adds Tippens. "The more cross- curriculum things we can do, the better." Along with the rest of the JMCC English Department, Tippens is working on writing excellence programs for cross-curriculum application. She is also planning to Cross more of the curriculum with Shakespeare in the future. W h i l e t r y i n g t o m a k e Shakespeare applicable to the community college student, Tip- pens' efforts and those of her col leagues have helped to open students' eyes to how pieces of in formation from varied disciplines fit together to create a wholly- educated individual. Tippens has taught at MCC for seven years. She currently is teaching Composition I and II, Technical Communications and English Literature. She and her family live in Woodstock. •V, -if r •wiTipptis writing tacky.. America's r*llobl« shipper!
