X; Sports 4 Marian Central wrestles to rebuild BySamNatrop PlaMMtor-HmU News Service WOODSTOCK- The loss of two sectional qualifiers and key team leaders doesn't have Marian Central Wrestling Coach Mike Garvey too worried. Garvey looks at his 1984-85 squad with optimism, but makes sure his goals are realistic. "Yes, we're rebuilding. We're always rebuilding because we don't have the feeder system that other schools do," Garvey said. "That's not to say we don't Preview MARIAN a Hl'RRICANES have a solid nucleus returning, because we do. We have kids who, if they decide to dedicate themselves and work their tails off can be very good wrestlers." He added that he can't give a true assessment of his team because he has only been at three practices. Garvey serves as assistant football coach for defeated, as was Piwowarczyk, in the sectionals last year. "Those two provided an uplift for the team," Garvey said. "I could almost always count on a big win-usually a pin-from Wohnrade early in the match, and if things were close late, Tony could usually come up for a win in the heavyweight match." Garvey said he is looking toward two underclassmen- sophomore 145-pounder Rick Powers and Senior Tom Snow- to emerge as team leaders. "Richie was 16 and 10 last year and lost in the sectionals by three points to the kid who eventually took second in the state last year," Garvey said. "That kind of wrestling from a kid who was only a freshman last year makes me think he can wrestle with the big boys. "Tommy and Wohnrade used to beat the tar out of one another in practice last year," he con tinued. "Snow has a good at titude. They're both good wrestlers. I expect a lot from both 6f them and they know that." Returning seniors for Marian include John Powers, who will, wrestle at either 185 pounds or heavyweight, Tony Remke (a probable 155-pounder), Jim If he dedicates himself, he's going to be a heckuva wrestler." Sophomores Chris Noe and »Jim Herff are battling for the 132-pound spot. Other two wrestlers Garvey cited were freshman Ben Tague (a possible 98-pounder) and Steve Strang, a contender at 119 pounds. Brendan Herrick, John Carzoli and Pete Huinker are also fighting for spots. "Pete is a tough, aggressive kid. He has the physical make-up to be a good wrestler," Garvey said " I am hoping to field 24 kids, two- deep at each weight class." As usual, Grant with its "wrestling dynasty" will be the team to beat, Garvey said. Grant and Round Lake also look to be near the top of the Nor thwest Suburban Conference, "and Johnsburg's program has grown by leaps and bounds." So where' exactly does that leave the Hurricanes? "I tell the kids to go out and worry about themselves," ^Garvey said. "I tell them not to worry about die team's won-loss record. It's a group of in dividuals working toward the team, but it's not really a team sport, in essence. Y/v^URT; lint1 food and <!r n* arc Sutfiwnifotl •», thffw.irm IMMIIN nil rharm ul IWIUH?" The Hurricanes, after being defeated by Elgin St. Edward, 43-24, rallied for a 40-29 win over Winnebago in the night's final dual meeting. The 'Canes won nine of 12 matches over Winnebago including five by pin. "Some of the kids ex ceeded my expectations and wrestled extremely well," Marian Central Coach Mike Garvey said "But on the other hand, some showed they are not in good physical condition and I don't like that. But for the first match, I'm not real upset with the outcome." Marian which played last Saturday. "Most of these kids have a year or two experience with me," he said. "Hopefully, somewhere in there, someone will provide the leadership we lost with (Mark) Wohnrade and Pivo (Tony Piwowarczyk). Wohnrade was a state qualifier t^o years ago, but was Gardner (145 or 155), Jim Peterson (138), Matt Carzoli (155), Snow (126) and Kevin McConville, who returns after a year's absence at either 132 or 138. Underclassmen who arevying for spots include 98-pounder Keith Schultz, Eric Swanson (105), Joe Remke (167), who Garvey said, "looks real strong.
