The primary program of the McHenry County Department of Health Environmental Health Division is the Food Service Sanitation Program. Over 936 establishments are licensed in the County of McHenry, all of which must be inspected at least twice a year in compliance with the McHenry County Public Health Ordinance and the requirements of the Illinois Department of Public Health for an approved Food Service Sanitation Program. During the last Fiscal Year for which the department has complete figures, personnel make 2,970 inspections of food establishments. The inspections are made in accordance with the Public Health Ordinance for McHenry County Articles related to food service establish ments. The McHenry County Department of Health also .provides Manager Certification Courses which are designed to provide information regarding sanitation to the managers of the food establishments. During the most recent completed Fiscal Year, five such Manager Certification Courses were provided by the department and as a result of attending those courses 90 managers were able to pass the Manager Cer tification Examination given by the com- the Illinois Department of Public Health. In case of conditions which pose an immediate threat to the health of nie public, establishment is jrequin bring those areas Into pliance immediately or to close their doors until the situation has been corrected. If the owner or operator disagrees with the findings of the person making the in spection, he o" she has the right to request an informal review by the Public Health Ad ministrator Following the administrators decision, If the operator or owner it still not satisfied, he or she can appeal the administrator's decision to a Hearing Committee of the Board of Health. If compliance is npt obtained within a reasonable time, the operator can have his permit to operate the establish ment suspended and, or in the case of flagrant violation, be taken to court and the establish ment closed. Also, any time the sanitation score obtained on an inspection falls below 60, the establishment is immediately closed. • Wrap I lions or oranges with ribbon and stud with doves. Place in basket in powder room for a delightful citrus sachet. • Another way to give your powder room a lovely fragrance is to place a drop of scetod oil (bath oil, musk oil, etc.) on a cool hghtbulb. When the bulb heats up, perfume flHs the air. • Where is It written that a Christmas tree has to be a pine tree? Even a willowy pah* or a prickly cactus Can catch the spirit when decked with tiny colored lights and candy cafces. • Having a party? Send postcards instend of traditional invitations. They are cheaper to ma# (13* verses 20*) and you can design your own with fun holiday stickers. • For informal parties, arrange seating in a semicircle and always have more guests than chairs. This encourages mingling. • Plan a mini-buffet. Be sure that all food is bite-sized, so guests can hold their grog with one hand and "graze"'with the other. Have pizzas the size of silver dollars, bketiae toast rounds topped with chicken salad, wee morsels of meat on baby buns, and for dessert, tiny tarts filed with lemon cream. • And to complete your party, create a wintery garden--fill your entry way or a corner of the Jiving room with white poinsettia plants and lots of white, scented votive caiKflm placed at various heights. When your party is over, give the poinsettias to your guests as they leave. ̂Cwvila Drive wisely to keep from becoming holiday statistic DECEMBER SPECIAL! By Sec. of State Jim Edgar Christmas holiday traffic should be heavy again this year, making driving difficult and increasing the risk of accidents. Last year, eight persons were killed and 1,762 were inured in 4,856 traffic accidents over the Christmas holiday. Drinking is one of the most ffym aweeja--sajbr YtmrHt \fj Mkgm. *0. Star 14. arwftfaMr wM«aa(f-IL 601H. ABow four nMti for m rwptj. frequent causes of holiday ac cidents. More than half of all traffic deaths are alcohol- related. If you have been drinking, let someone else drive or call a cab. If you plan to drive home for the holidays this year, take the following precautions: -Wear your safety belt. The Illinois child passenger protection law requires that children under age four must ride in an approved child safety seat. Children four or five years of age must be in a child safety seat or seat belt. -Allow plenty of time to reach your destination safely by ob serving the 55 mph speed limit. -Make regular rest stops along the way and stop driving if you feel drowsy. A cup of coffee, fresh air and stretching will help you stay awake. However, if your are very sleepy, take a nap. -Be sure your vehicle is in good operating condition, especially with the potential for bad weather. Have a good supply of windshield washer solution before you start. Have a safe arid happy holiday season. Don't become one of next year's statistics.
