Page 14. PLA1INPEALER HERALD, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14,1984 Sports Marian boys bested by tough Huntley crew Rv filAVA DaAamxv. A 9 A A m • • • A . : . By Steve Peterson WiMmlm nwldNr--SfrW HUNTLEY-Marian Central boys' basketball Coach Hans Bokus had good reason to be disappointed Tuesday night. After playing well in a three- point loss to Johnsburg last week, the Hurricanes were never in the contest at Huntley, losing 69-53. The non-conference defeat was Marian's fourth straight, dropping its overall mark to 2-4. "I was very disappointed at the way we played tonight. After • good game Friday night, for the most part, the kids did not come to play ball. We were out hustled, outworked," Rokus said To say the Hurricanes started slowly would qualify as an understatement. Huntley, using an aggressive press and taking advantage of several Marian turnovers, led 12-0 before the Hurricanes scored. TTiat was with 3:34 left in the first quarter. Although the Hurricanes eventually recovered from the deficit to forge a tie, the Red skins dominated the second quarter and the game was decided as Huntley eqjoyed a 13- point half time lead. The one-two punch of Hun tley's Todd Ream and Paul Manning proved to be too much for the Hurricanes. Ream, son of Redskin coach Ed Ream, finished with 23 points on nine field goals, including one that will probably get a good deal of conversation at the Ream household. His 40-footer from just beyond half-court banked home at the half time buzzer to give the Redskins the margin. Manning had 22 points on seven field goals, and was 8- of-10 from the free-throw line. "Overall, our press hurt them. They came in a little befuddled, especially after the 12-0 lead," Ed Ream said after his team improved to 6-1 overall. "Sometimes I get on Todd because he does not use the glass on layup drills," Coach Ream added. It was Manning that got things going for the Redskins. His six free throws and a bucket ac counted for eight of the Red skins' first 10 points. Larry Basel added the other field goal and Scott Kunde's hoop made it 12-0. Andy Hartlieb prevented a shutout, scoring Marian's first hoop on a 17-footer. Hartlieb's four free throws and a 15-footer, along with two Mike Green charity tosses, closed the first- quarter Huntley lead to 16-10. Marian, in its best run of the night, scored the first six points of the second quarter on of fensive rebound tip-ins by Kurt Stevens and Chris Brown and an outside jumper from Tom Will for a 16-16 tie. But that was the first, last and only time the Hurricanes would be even. "We can't stand prosperity sometimes," Coach Ream said. Using a deliberate offense, Huntley scored on a layup by Manning for an 11-point bulge with 50 seconds left. A Marian turnover then led to Ream's dramatic half-court heave. Marian Central enjoyed a slim 12-11 margin for the third quarter as the Hurricanes began to get the ball inside and swit ched to a man-to-man defense, a 25-footer from Will made it 43-36 Huntley after three. The Hurricanes closed to within seven twice in the fourth quarter. But Huntley made its free throws down the stretch, converting on 9-of-12 over the last four minutes. Hartlieb, who made 7-of-9 free throws, led the Hurricanes with 15 points. Stevens followed with 12. 0 8th grade tourney set The American Legion Eighth Grade Basketball Tournament will be held at Johnsburg Jr. High School, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 19.
