Page 2 • PLAIN DEALER HERALD. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14.1984 Opinion/Politics Let's not forget the needy at the yule; man or beast As Chicago suburbia goes, we may not be affluent, but in comparison with the rest of the world, McHeiiry is a prosperous community with a bright future that might well be the envy of many. Does this mean that we have no poor among us? It definitely does not. There are many stomachs that go to bed each night with a gnawing sensation because the food supply failed to meet the needs of the energy expended. For the doubting among you, take the word of Joan Bauer, who has long coordinated the holiday appeal for FISH. She has been a leader in caring for the poor and other individuals down on their luck for the past several years, assisted by a corps of volunteers whose dedication rivals her own. '/ At Thanksgiviag time, 13* families were given baskets con- , taining turkeys and all other ingredients necessary to prepare a Miisin' &, LS " landerin BY KAF i holiday meal. This number will rise at Christmas to at least 200, depending on the support of the public. And what will they receive? "Food is not the focus of the Christmas campaign," said Mrs. * Bauer, who added that of course it will be made available to those ; in greatest need. "Toys, clothing--there is nothing that isn't needed," she continued with the conviction of one who knows the subject from * A to Z. Underwear will be supplied for 100 children. One local organisation gave certificates for 53 turkeys at j Thanksgiving, allowing FISH to meet the needs of that many families. An innovative idea came from a McHenry business owner who offered a discount on service for a donation to FISH. For those with a fear that contributions will go to those with little need, there is assurance that interviews are conducted by volunteers with all who will be assisted. They are families who have submitted their own names in a time of extreme need, or have been phoned in, sometimes anonymously, by others who * recognized their plight. This year's drive is being conducted Dec. 21,22 and 23 from the FISH headquarters located in St. Patrick Church hall on 4 Washington Street. 'j, "The earlier the better," stressed Mrs. Bauer, who asks that ; contributions be brought to the landing above the hall starting f Monday, Dec. 18. Checks may be sent to FISH of McHenry, Inc., P.O. Box 282, 1 McHenry. The gift is tax deductible. With six letters of appeal and our checkbook in front of us, it becomes evident that the needs of others are many and far- reaching. At our own door each morning and each night are two kitties, * apparently homeless, who take advantage of the proffer of t makeshift sleeping quarters outside and some food. In our large Boxelder tree are gathered hundreds of birds of all kinds, cheerful in spite of the cold winds of winter. They offer a song in exchange for twice daily offering of food to sustain them nst even worse weather to come. And over on the Fox River there is a noticeable change as the wild ducks, joined by a sizeable number of geese, transfer their i location from the beach area to the fast freezing water. Fewer and fewer are the number of people who make daily trips to satisfy their hunger. Their hope lies in response to an appeal made through can- nisters now located in local stores. Through a program started 13 years ago, money obtained in this way buys quantities of corn to be fed at several feeding stations along the river. Dorothy Hollander, who has coordinated this effort from the start, said $200 is the maximum realized in any season. This is sufficient only to feed corn during the worst winter weather. Folks who enjoy this natural attribute of McHenry (and the number is growing) are encouraged to send their donations to the Feed the Duck campaign, in care of the McHenry Savings and Loan, McHenry. Another organization hoping to gain new friends during the holiday season is the non-profit Wildlife in Need Foundation, otherwise known as WIN. This is the support group for the wildlife rehabilitation segment of the McHenry County Con servation Department. When the activities of wildlife rehabilitation were about to be curtailed last September, WIN set out on a campaign for public assistance so that sick and injured wildlife of all kinds, not. only endangered species, could continue to be given assistance. Those unable to give a monetary contribution are encouraged to help with gifts of nuts, paper towels, tissue and bird seed, particularly sunflower seeds. Like many other non-profit gifts, this one is tax deductible. Checks may be sent to the Wildlife In Need Foundation, P.O. Box 524, Woodstock, HI., 60098. This article was written by Chris Juzwik and began with "Ed Wolff has a headache." Well it is rapidly turning into a migraine. On Dec. 12, a letter was printed in this column under the heading, "VFW board is offended by article." The VFW letter took exception to in formation provided by Pete Merkel of the city and the reporting of it by Chris. As president and chief spokesman for the league, I would like to state at this time that we believe Chris did a great job of reporting on this sad issue of vandalism. The intent of this report was not to praise the people and organizations who donate their time and money to ensure a successful program, but rather identify a true problem which exists in and around our community. ' While I am unable to vouch for the accuracy of the quotes at tributed to Mr. Merkel, I can say that I was quoted without error in every instance. The letter from the VFW pointed out some of their con tributions to our league. Let me assure you there are many more they failed to mention. We, in the league, never try to single out any one organization or individual by name because there are so many we would surely omit someone by ac cident. In an effort to show our ap preciation, I would like to commend the'many merchants who sponsor and provide our league with discounts and donations as well as all the organizations that help make our program work in any way they can. A special recognition goes out to all the parents who arrange their personal schedules so their children can play in the program. On behalf of the McHenry Junior Youth League, we would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and invite all interested parties to attend the next league meeting on Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW. In closing I would like to commend the McHenry Plaindealer first, for the fine job we believe they do in covering events and newsworthy items about us and second, for providing a forum where we can express our opinions.
