Fear not I have a simple solution to the Christmas shopping blues that will once again bring joy to both givers and receiv ers Fifteen years ago I discovered a wa> to give everyone on my Christmas list the same thing (thereby simplifying my shop ping trips considerably), while at the same time giving everyone a gift tailored to his or her own needs and interests (thereby making for a truly appreciative gift re ceiver) The answer to this riddle: Buy books (•real gift idea Books make great gifts because, with a little effort, you can find a book on \irtu- ally any subject matter. Even those on your list who aren't read ers normally will be easy to buy for. it you think for a moment, for instance, ah uncle wiio loves to brag that he hasn't read a book since high school (he really means novels) gets a book every Christmas that he thanks me for profusely Why? Because I always pick a book on his lifelong passion -- cars I've given him everything from a picture book on antique cars to the latest Chilton Auto Repair Man ual. He loves his books more than the bor-. ing shirt and tie combos I used to give him. Books for hobbies I give cookbooks to an aunt who spends all her spare time in the kitchen, photogra phy books to my shutterbug kid sister, and household project books to mv do-it-your self dad. After 15 years as « book-giver. I've learned that these are the kinds of books that get more than one reading. I enjoy giving a gift that 1 know will be used all year long, or even for years to come And every time my uncle gets out his Chilton Manual to do a tune-up. he's going to remember his favorite nephew who thought enough to get him a gift he can really use. I've been doing my Christmas shopping early this year. I've discovered a series of books that are going to make terrific gifts for my do-it-yourself family, on subjects ranging from furniture building to devel oping your own pictures. The books are written by Ed and Stevie Baldwin, a husbahd and wife team who founded and direct The Family Workshop, a creative idea company in Tulsa. Okla-> homa." The Baldwins arc experts at presenting complicated how-to information in an easy-to-rcad. easy-to-follow format. You may already know them through their how-to columns syndicated in over 400 new spapers nationwide or their craft dem onstrations on television. Below is a list of some of their books available for this year's Christmas shopping. Building Outdoor Structures and Build ing OutdoOY Furniture (both S 10.95) pro vide complete plans for making 30 •projects for the garden, yard and patio. The projects are both practical and stylish. as is evident from the color photos of each finished project. This is a book suitable for both novice and experienced home builders. Projects include everything from patio furniture and storage sheds to fences and gazebos. For parents looking for a way to chan nel the inexhaustible energy of their kids, the Baldwins offer Toys to Ride ($10.95). It includes plans for 30 riding toys that are propelled citiier by pushing or pedaling. Color photos arid clear instructions help make this the perfect project bwk for any parent (or grandparent) with a basic home tool kit. ( onstructing toys In the same vein. The Great Mechanical W>oden Toy Book ($10.95) is filled with everything you need to know for con structing six toys that move. For years I've treasured a mechanical wooden toy carousel that's been passed down through my family for generations. I'll pass it on to my daughter some day. but I'm also going to start a new family tradi tion by making her the silly but wonderful "Do-Nothing Machine" found in this book. ; Other projects (all depicted in full color) include an oil well pump jack, a cog dog. a carousel and a fantastic freight train with a working water car. In July, for her birthday. I gave my cam- cra-crazy sister the Baldwins' Focus On Photography ($12.95). an excellent intro duction to the basics for beginners of any age. It helped her choose a 35mm camera and the accessories she needed, like addi tional lenses and filters. For Christmas I'm giving her the se cond Family Workshop photography book -- Darkroom Designs and Techniques ($12.95). In down-to-earth language, it show s how to plan a home darkroom, with electrical and plumbing specifications, storage tips, equipment you'll need and much more. Also covered arc chemicals, developing, procedures, and advanced printing techniques. Quilting fever Like millions of others, my oldest sister and numerous aunts and cousins have quilting fever. Consequently, the Baldwins' The Quilled Clothing Collec tion ($10.95) makes it easy for me to cover six gifts this Christmas. The books will go to a half dozen quilt- ers who. after covering the beds with enough quilts to last a millennium, arc ready to move on to more challenging pro jects. In fact, there's an entire wardrobe of projects here, everything from formal evening wear to hunting vests. All projects are show n finished in full-color, witli com plete patterns and instructions. The last Family Workshop book I'm go ing to buy for Christmas is Vie First Fam ily Computer Book. Craft experts they may be. but the Baldwins know how to translate computerese into plain English. This lucid, non-technical introduction to computers underscores just how good the authors are at presenting technical in formation to general readers. The humor found throughout the book makes it a natu ral for kids. I'm going to keep this Family Workshop book for myself. All the Family Workshop books men tioned here arc published by Chilton Book Company. They arc available in book stores nationwide, or they may be ordered directly by writing to: Chilton Book Com pany. Dept. M. Radnor.
