That is unless your team hits a seven-minute scoring draught that stretches across two quarters. And that's exactly what ; happened Friday night as Marian Central hit one of those "nothing would fall" periods in dropping a 51-41 Northwest Suburban Conference decision Jto Grayslake Friday night. The Hurricanes, now 0-2 in the NWSC and 2-4 overall, grabbed an early 8-2 lead and seemed in control after Tom Will hit a driving Layup with 4:45 left in the first quarter. But those were Marian's last points until Kurt Stevens hit two free throws with 5:46 left in the second period. By then, Grayslake had erased the early deficit and climbed to a 14-10 lead. The Hurricanes got as close as 18-16 on Will's 15-footer, but the Rams tallied 12 of the last 15 points of the half for a 30- 19 lead at the intermission. "IT WAS A CASE where the shots wouldn't fall. They were good shots - 10-, 12-, 14-footers - and we couldn't sink them. We had a stretch were we were stuck on eight (points) forever," hurricanes Coach Hans Rokus said. "Our shot selection was good. We just hit an ice-cold spell where they took control." Not only did Marian have shooting problems, but acquired early foul troubles. Andy Hartlieb, who picked up three fouls in the first half, was assessed No. 4 with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Seeing that, Rokus decided to take the senior guard out of the game. However, before he was able to come out, Hartlieb had picked up his fifth personal with 3:36 remaining in the period. "Not having Andy in there during the stretch run really hurt," Rokus said. "But give Grayslake credit. They made their free throws." THE RAMS swished 23-of-27 free throws on the night. In fact, their final 10 points of the con­ test came from the charity stripe during the last 2:02 of the game. Will scored six of Marian's first eight points of the second half to pull MC to within 33-27 with 3:09 to play in the third quarter. But the only points Marian could muster over the final three minutes were two Bill Hartmann free throws at the 1:03 mark. GL managed only one basket and four free throws in the period wile Marian tallied 10 points (six by Will, four by Hartmann) to make it a 35-29 contest entering the final stanza. A driving layup by Will, a 10- footer by Hartmann and a Will steal-and-layup pulled the hosts to within 37-35 at the 5:25 mark. However, GL got two quick hoops from 6-foot-6 center Gary Link to go on a 9-2 spurt and lock the contest away. Marian got as close as 46-40 on Stevens' free throws, but the Rams made five of their last six to thwart a Marian comeback. "The kids came back. They played poorly on Tuesday (in a loss to Huntley) and I thought they played with pride and in­ tensity tonight," Rokus said. "We'll jell soon. We bounced back tonight and we'll bounce back again." Will led the slim Marian scoring attack with 15 points. Hartmann added eight, and Stevens and Hartlieb had seven. Rabelhofer's layup with 3:40 remaining in the quarter accounted for R-B's points. THEN, WITH JUST over three minutes remaining in the quarter, the game's turning point occurred. Klein scored on an offensive rebound and was fouled. Burlington Central coach Jim Woodward's continued ob­ jections to the referee's call led to three technical fouls as well as his ejection from the game. Klein hit his free throw to complete the three-point play and Otto stepped to the line and sank four-of-six technical free throws. R-B inbounded the ball and Otto was fouled by Getzelman. Getzelman's response to that call drew yet another technical foul. Otto again stepped to the line, but hit only one-of-three free throws. AFTER ALL THE action, R-B had regained its 14-point lead, 43-29, with 3:00 left in the third quarter. R-B led after three quarters, 43-31. "The technicals almost worked against us," Brown said, "it fired them up and we missed some free throws." BC used that intensity to score the fourth quarter's first seven points to pull within five points, 43-38. Otto ended that streak with a 10-foot jump shot. Rodiek's six-footer matched Getzelman's 12-foot jump shot to maintain R-B's eight-point lead, 49-41, with 3:27 remaining in the game. Two free throws apiece down the stretch by Dave Johnson, Otto and klein iced the game. As the new year approaches, Brown is pleased with the flexibility and depth he's been able to develop so far.
