And the Lady Warriors are starting to make their coach's prediction come true. McHenry dropped two tough decisions, to Dundee-Crown Thursday and Grayslake Satur day, but Wirtz said his team is "getting there. "We've played pretty well, all things considered," Wirtz said. "We lost to Dundee-Crown (43-26) but we led alter the first quarter, and led with 6:20 left in the first half. They outscored us 33-15 from thereon, though." The two losses dropped the Lady Warriors to 0-4 on the young year, 0-1 in the Fox Valley Conference. McHenry will travel to Johnsburg Wednesday for a non-conference match-up. The Johnaburg girls' basketball squad captured its second victory of the season Thursday, crushing non-conference foe Jacobs 44-26 in Algonquin. Junior Laura Oeffling again paced the Lady Skyhawks' attack, JHS, McHenry girls set to resume ri By Chris Juzwik PlkliMtealer-Herald iporta editor The girls' basketball teams at McHenry and Johnsburg are gearing up for a Wednesday match-up in Johnsburg, which, from all appearances, appears to be a good one. The two teams are heading in the same direction, but the Skyhawks are perhaps a step ahead of the Warriors. While McHenry is looking to get on track, Johnsburg will be trying to stay there. The 2-2 Skyhawks are fresh off a non-conference win over Jacobs, and the 0-4 Warriors are coming off two tough losses, to Dundee-Crown Thurs day and Grayslake Saturday. But, Warrior coach Pat Wirtz insists, his team is playing bet ter. "We're getting there," Wirtz said. "We've got a ways to go, but we're getting there." THE WARRIORS suit up just eight players each game, while the Skyhawks will actually use 10 in an outing. Wirtz sees that as a disad vantage for his squad. "I haven't seen them play yet," he said, "but I know they use a lot of players. It's hard for us with just seven or eight." JHS head coach Nancy Fahey's troops like to run up and down the floor. To do that, rebounding is a key. "If we run, we do pretty well. But you have to get rebounds to run," she said. "FROM WHAT I can see, we have a height advantage over them," Fahey said, after wat- c h i n g M c H e n r y p l a y Grayslake. "Controlling the boards is a key for us to win. "I saw them playing a 2-3 zone against Grayslake. Ob viously, we'll have to shoot well to pull them out and get the ball inside." Fahey said she isn't sure what to expect from the War riors defensively. "Last year against us (a last- second, two-point Skyhawk win), he (Wirtz) played a box- and-one on us. I don't know what he'll do this time." W I L L T H E McHenry-Johnsburg aura and all that goes along with it play a part in the game's outcome? "There's a rivalry there, sure," said Fahey. "But I think it's a positiye one. I'm glad they put us on their schedule and vice-versa. It's a good game, a little more than the average game." Wirtz concurred. "Our girls will play hard. They'll be ready to play. The Johnsburg thing is a lot like our conference rivals, like Woodstock and the Crystal Lake schools. With some teams, you're not ready to play mentally. I'm sure we will be against Johnsburg." with 21 points. Bev Hiller chipped in eight. ' Oeffling corralled nine re bounds, while freshman Caroline Shine grabbed six caroms. "Caroline had an excellent ^ game," praised JHS coach Nancy Fahey. "I was particularly pleas ed with her play. She was real , solid." FAHEY SAID THE Skyhawks JOHNSBURG * they were making mistakes, they turned things around. Wehrstein was Grant's man on the spot. He was finding numerous passes to intercept and when he wasn't making shots from the floor, he was feeding his teammates with nifty passes to boost his team's ad vantage. "DEFENSE WAS definitely a key to our game," said Grant coach Maple. "We outrebounded Johnsburg and were able to capitalize on several steals and deflections. "Johnsburg was at a loss of what to do. They were just out of sync," commented Maple. "When Johnsburg went man-to-man, we shuffled players and took the game." Maple explained that during halftime he told his team to play Johnsburg's Nichols witnman-to man coverage. That strategy proved to be ef fective. Nichols was allowed only four shots in the second half, misfiring on every one. "We need someone who want to get inside and work to score," ex plained Beck. So far no consistant player had emerged and when our opponents shut us down from the outside, we are in trouble." GRANT CONTINUED to hold their lead with 6-5 center Mark Kohl scoring ten points in the se cond half, while the remainder of the Bulldogs collected their points from the charity stripe. were able to get their running game untracked against the Golden Bagles. JHS led 9-8 after one quarter, and just 18-12 at the half, but blew the game open in the third quarter, pulling out to a 90-18 advantage after three; The Skyhawks' poor shooting percentage continued, as they shot 27 percent -- 17-for-62. "We took plenty of shots," Fahey said. "And we took good shots. We've been emphasizing getting the ball inside more, and we did that." The Skyhawks will host McHenry in a non-conference bat tle Wednesday, and then travel to Wauconda for a date with high: scoring Saundra Cermak and Co. Thursday. Johnsburg is 2-2 on the season, 0-1 in the Northwest Suburban. (Continued from page 20; The loss dropped Johnsburg below the .500 mark with a 1-2 con ference record and an overall record of 3-3. Despite the loss, Beck was pleased with some aspects of the game. "Our guards did handle the ball well. They moved the ball to the open people and that is en couraging. We just have to do more with the ball inside." Wehrstein led all scorers with 17 ints. Grant's Kohl and Matt abrowski followed behind with 12 points.
