Louise Rogers, "Our member agencies and their employees provide outstanding support of the United Way campaign every year. Agency volunteers help plan and lead the activities of several key campaign activities and agency employees rank amongst the most generous personal contributors to United Way despite the fact that recent cuts in funding from some non- United Way sources have severly restricted the amounts that our agencies are able to pay their dedicated employees. For example, per capita giving by the employees of McHenry County Catholic Social Services GRAYSUKE JEWELERS 143 CENTCR (31?) 2238444 is at $103 per person, and pledges from the Family Ser vices and Community Mental Health Center employees in* creased 18 percent to $3,569 in this campaign." Rogers summed up progress of the campaign to date with the following assessment: "The campaign showed marked growth towards our ambitious goal, But we still have quite a lot to accomplish if we are to achieve our goal when the campaign comes to a close on Jan. 29. We have now raised $27,800 of the total $61,340 new contributions needed to reach the $315,000 goal and 65 percent of our prior year's contributors have reported gifts so far." By Sec. of Stat# Jim Edgar When heavy snow and strong winds create blizzard conditions in Illinois, motorists can be stranded on the highway for hours or even days in extreme cases. Safety hints: If you suddenly become stranded during a winter storm, stay in your car until help arrives. If help does not arrive immediately, you will be better able to cope with the situation if you have a winter survival kit in your car. The . Illinois - JSmergenoy Services and Disaster Agency provides a list of items for an effective survival kit. First, fill a two-or three-pound coffee can with quick-energy and nonperishable foods, first aid supplies (bandages, aspirin and essential prescription medicines) and other survival items. Chocolate and dried fruits are good quick-energy sources to help produce.body heat. Other nonperishable foods can include instant coffee or tea, dry soup and bouillon cubes. If you are stranded for more than a few hours, you can make drinking water by melting snow in the coffee can. To do this, hang the can from your rear- view mirror by running string or wire through two small holes near the top of the can. Melt the snow by placing a small wide- base candle in a small pie tin on the dash. Take several books of matches and don't forget spoons and insulated cups for the soup, -eoffet^or 4M. Among- the ~suK vival items motorists a ' carry are a compass, a flashlight with extra batteries, ski caps, and gloves or mittens. Finally, take extra blankets, flares, salt or sand, a shovel and a fire extinguisher in the car.
