Wm. A. O'Rourke and Rev. Raymond Murray, C.S.C. celebrating the masses; St. Mary's Church with masses beginning at 5 a.m. and Rev. C.S. Nix serving at the early time: St. John's Church welcoming the Christmas morn at 5 a.m. with Rev. A.J. Vollmann; Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with a 7:30 p.m. service Christmas night combined with a children's program; and the Methodist church holding its Christmas service on Dec. 23 with Rev. L.H. Brattain giving the ser­ mon. TWICE TOLD TALES Edited from our files of years gone by Vernon J. Knox was congratulated on passing the state bar examination held recently in Springfield. Harold Taxman reported on the Boy Scout Christmas party and Beatrice Williams described the Girl Scout program given for the Mothers Club and the mothers of the Scouts. Vycital's encouraged everyone to "be sure Santa has toys and gifts" and offered Joe Penner and his duck for 59 cents, Daisy Air Rifles from $1 to $2.95 and Hi-speed Johnson skates at $4.95. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 21, 1944) The award of the Silver Star TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 17, 1959) A twenty-six year pastorate at Spring Grove will end for Father John Daleiden on Jan. 4, ac­ cording to an announcement from the chancery office of the Rockford diocese. Rev. Daleiden will take a new pastorate at St. Joseph parish in Freeport. McHenry friends will be happy to learn that Mrs. Edith McAndrews is still enjoying good health for her advanced years and on Monday of this week celebrated her 96th bir­ thday. A Christmas letter to Santa Claus came from "Maggie". She asked for a wall pencil shar­ pener and in a postscript added, "I hope one of my sons will see this wish." Michael Schaefer was re­ elected president of the John- sburg Community club for the 1900 year. Named to serve with Mr. Schaefer for another year were Ray Groh, vice-president; Harold Freund, secretary; Frank Schmitt, treasurer; Elmer Meyers and Henry Hiller, trustees. The McHenry theatre offered a giant two hour Walt Disney Show the week end before Christmas. • Featured were "Noah's Ark", "Eyes in Outer Space", "The Seven Cities of Antartica" and "Donald in Mathmagic Land." TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 18, 1974) A sizable number of volun­ teers from the McHenry Senior Citizens club gathered at the city hall two days last week to attend training classes on "Rules of the Road" review course. The goal is to train senior citizens to help other older Americans perform successfully when taking their driver license renewal tests. President Charles Weingart of the McHenry County Fair Association met with other officers to discuss a possible change in plans for the annual county fair. At the annual meeting Weingart began, his sixth full year as president. Senator Jack Schaffer, R- Cary, was named to a position on the new Chain of Lakes-Fox River commission, according to an announcement by Illinois Senate President, William Harris. ^ % r v Susan Wickenkamp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Winkenkamp, was winner v of first prize in the McHenry High School Christmas card design contest. The Warriors basketball team downed the Grant five of Fox Lake by a 51-35 count last Tuesday night. John "Bud" Miller found himself in this game and connected with seven field goals and one free shot for a total of 15 points.
