SECTION 2. PAGE 4 - PLAIN DEALER HERALD. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19,1984 Farmers respond well to FS services Farmer signiip for the two- year-old Cropatrol, an agronomic service of McHenry FS, has . been impressive, Richard Walters, president of the farmer-owned cooperative, told 550 farm men and women at the company's annual meeting. Cropatrol is a service division of McHenry FS with its own specialists and consultants. Personnel do not sell products but provide objective soil, fertilizer, seed and crop production analysis for farmer customers, Walters explained. The service division plans to expand gradually to include farm finanti'al planning assistance, farm management assistance and record keeping services. "While advances are being made in Cropatrol, we pledge to maintain the highest standards possible in our sup plies division and grain marketing," Walters said. General Manager Stanley Steagall reviewed the com pany's turnaround in sales and service from fiscal 1983, in creasing net income and making possible the payment of over $388,000 to farmers in the form of patronage refunds. Sales recovered from a 1983 level of $23 million to $27.4 million in 1984. From a 1983 profit of $54,402 the company achieved a profit of $520,133 in 1984. But Steagall stressed that the reduction in purchases by farmers, due to poor profitability, has left large unused capacity for all businesses supplying farmers. Steagall said the high federal deficit continues to plague farmers, "The high deficit makes interest rates high." Interest expense amounts to 22 percent of the operating expenses of many farmers. Reducing the federal deficit will help reduce interest rates, a major goal of Farm Bureau, McHenry FS and those in the Assessors called for meeting By Jan. 1, the Supervisor of Assessments will assemble all assessors and their deputies for consultation and instructions. The goal is to produce unifor mity in the action of the assessors and their deputy assessors in McHenry County. The instructions will be in writing and available to the public. The assembly, called for by Randall W. Woloski, CIAO, supervisor of assessments for McHenry County, will be held Friday, Dec. 28, at 1:30 p.m. in the County Board Room, McHenry County Courthouse, 2200 N. Seminary Ave., Wood stock. That could increase prices paid farmers." Steagall said a one percent drop in the interest rate lowers a farmer's cost of production one and a half percent. Calling attention to the depressed farm business climate and subsequent impact on companies that supply far mers, Steagall said, "the past few years have been stressful for everyone connected with farming. The employees of McHenry FS have dealt ex ceedingly well with this pressure." Bert Rank, a 30-year em ployee, was honored on this milestone anniversary of ser vice. Rank started in 1954, working in the warehouse at Woodstock. In 1961 Rank went into the warehouse office and also in the merchandise area. He moved into the present McHenry FS building in 1976 when the headquarters was constructed. Today he coordinates between warehouses and concentrates on keeping chemical and bulk fertilizer supplies available to the company's seven locations. Rank and his wife, Carol, have four sons: Steve, 18; Scott, 16; Shawn, 15; and Shane, 13. Three directors were re elected : Lester Guenther, Woodstock; Mike Hogan, Ringwood; and Carroll Loh- meyer, Woodstock. Guenther and his wife, Ruth, farm 300 acres. Guenther and his brother, George, have a farrow-to-finish swine operation and market about 1,800 hogs a year. Hogan farms 2,000 acres with his brother Harry, and his son, Mike, Jr. They have a 70-cow dairy herd along with 70 head of other dairy animals. Lohmeyer operates a 500-acre farm in rural Woodstock. A farmer all his life, Carroll started farming at his present location in 1957. He had a dairy herd for many years but now operates a graih farm. SEP EVERY WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY& SATURDAY!
