Sometimes I find a refund farm after I have purchased a PT°ftuct I no longer have the regwer tape. Or, I may have used the same receipt for another mail-in offer. I know ypu are probably going to tell nle to save all my receipts, but I dont have the time. Is there •hything you can do to get the manufacturers to eliminate t h e i r - r e g i s t e r - t a p e i?- Ellie Murray, Bninawick, N.J. Coupon Clipper Dear Eilie-Manufacturer's refund offers frequently ask for £ register tape for two reasons. First, it is additional proof that jiou purchased the product, ffcther than found the empty Mckage somewhere or received 8 from your aunt. Second, the requirement promotes what the. lufacturers call "slippage." a consumer purchases a product intending to send for the Jfcfund and then forgets to do it, qr is unable to do it because of a list register tape, this is slip page. Industry experts say that Qiore than half of the people who purchase a product because of a refund offer never send for the Offer. What can you do about this dtuation? I recommend that anyone who wants to benefit from refund offers should save register tapes as well as proofs of purchase. Why be a slippage victim? Save your tapes because it is all part of our money-saving game. I have no problem going through old tapes when an offer requires one. Remember, most companies will accept just a portion of the tape with the price of the product circled. Be sure to write the name of the store at the top of the tape. SMART SHOPPER AWARD This week my Smart Shopper Award goes to Helen Phillips of Lorain, Ohio: "I purchased six bottles of Lifestage vitamins priced at $3.38 each, and using 35-cent coupons which the store doubled, my cost was $16.08. I then took the Universal Product Code symbols off the packages and sent for a $10 Lifestage refund. "But my savings were not over. I soon found another Lifestage offer that brought me a $2.79 refund for the picture from the front of the box. Soon after another offer brought me $3 for four more of the package fronts. So, I received a total of $15.79 in refunds and my six bottles of vitamins cost me only 29 cents! How is that for healthy savings?' Mrs. Phillips and other smart shoppers whose money-saving adventures appear in my column receive a copy of the book "The Guide to Coupons & Refunds." Write to me in care of this paper.
