Keep clean furnace area to prevent home injuries SECTION 2 - P AG^19 - PLAINDE ALER HER ALU. WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 19.19W A* Every winter, more than 8,000 Americans receive emergency treatment w for injuries associated with furnaces. Too many households rely on a furnace to function properly year after year without giving it the attention that all mechanical equipment needs. The Dlinois Department of Public Health issues the following safety tips that may help prevent a furnace-related accident: --Clear any combustible material from the furnace area. Remove all accumulated rub bish such as newspapers, boxes, sawdust, and woodscraps. -All fuel-burning appliances need air in order to burn fuel If a furnace is fleces properly. "starved" of the necessary intake air, it will not operate efficiently. This inefficient consumption of fuel can produce fatal quantities of carbon monoxide. In an effort to save energy, many people are over- insulating their homes. Fur naces actually need some air coming in,'either from around doors or windows or through intake-air piping. Intake-air piping is required by building codes in new homes or when new furnaces are installed, but many older homes do not have this piping. -When the pilot light is turned on, natural gas vapors begin to accumlate. If the pilot light is MOLLY MILLIGAN Your Home Decorator © 1964 Patsy Mitotan Syndicate 4 I? The state health department recommends that the pilot light be lit and the furnace checked regularly by a service company. -A heating system should be cleaned periodically. The filters should be vacuumed and washed at regular intervals. If they become too clogged with dust and lint, they should be replaced, because this debris will prevent fumes from escaping out the chimney or vent. RETIRE TO THE PORCH Dear Molly Milligan: Our family home was built in 1950. French doors in the living room open onto a lovely screened porch. Now that my husband and I are retired, we hope to spend many hours on the porch reading, enjoying our rose garden, making travel plans and just plain loafing. We would welcome any ideas which would help us spiff up this old porch. Edna and Lou, Austin Dear Edna and Lou: Because your porch is directly off of your living room, it would be nice to use the same floor color in both areas. Then one room will flow into the next and the entire space will appear larger. And since your porch is just steps away from your garden, why not let Mother Nature be your decorator? Instead of bright colors and fancy furniture, consider using muted colors and natural textures which will underscore, rather than overwhelm, your view. Choose furniture that is comfortable, sturdy and waterproof. This is the time of year when you can catch some great bargains on porch, patio furniture. Wicker is always desireable because it is light, airy and can be used both indoors and out. If you have enough room, it might be fun to add a day bed with lots of comfortable pillows for lounging. A great setup for lazy afternoon naps, sultry summer evenings and overnight visits from grandchildren. Enjoy your porch and your retirement years, Edna and Lou, and may you have "good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life". Dear Molly Milligan: I would love to decorate my living room in several shades of purple. My friends think I am deranged. What do you think? - Lil, Poplar Bluff, MO% Dear Lil: Deranged? Not at all. The fact that you gravitate to the color purple tells me that you live dramatically, feel passionately and love with abandon. You also enjoy pomp and circumstance as well as elaborate displays of affec tion. With careful planning, Lil, you can pull off your scheme to do your liv ing room in shades of purple. Select the shade you want for your walls and then have your paint dealer add a touch of gray to soften the color slightly. Paint the ceiling and trim white. Introduce baby blues, light greens and various shades of pink as accents. An abundance of lush, green plants and fresh flowers will balahce your color scheme and help create an "English garden" affect. Lacquer furniture white or use light woods--such as bleached pine or blond oak--to complete the look. If you have a question for Your Home Decorator, send it along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Molly Milligan, P.O. Box 14, Dundee, IL 60118. Allow four weeks for a reply. Healthy: -Screen chimneys or vents They make ideal warm nesting sites for small animals and birds if they are not screened. -Soot in chimneys and flues is highly combustible, and if ignited, can cause a fireball to whoosh down into a furnace or fireplace and out into the room; so clean them reglarly, also. -Floor-furnace grates are especially hazardous to toddlers who can crawl onto the hot metal or adults who can fall on them and suffer severe burns. These grates should be covered with screens made for the purpose. -Keep flammable liquids such. as gasoline, kerosene and cleaning fluid away from the furnace. Flammable liquids should be stored in tightly capped safety cans well away from any flame or heat source- perferably outside. Following these health and safety tips can greatly reduce the chances of any family member being one of the thousands of people in America who experience a furnace- related accident this winter.
