Marian dropped to (H in the Northwest Suburban Conference and 2-6 overall while Marengo •improved to 4-0 conference and 6-2 overall. The Hurricanes looketkjike they were going to give the Indians a run for their money in the firfct quarter. * Marengo scored first for a 2-0 lead, but Marian Central out- scored the Indians, 8-2, to take ail"8-4 lead, but the lead did not last long. MARIAN (51): Woodstock tops CLC, claims 1st Plalmtoaler-Herald New* Service CRYSTAL LAKE - The Woodstock Blue Streaks snap ped Crystal Lake Central's five-game winning streak Tues day night, and in the process, claimed sole possession of first place in the Fox Valley Con ference boys' basketball race. The win puts Woodstock, the defending FVC champ, back at the top at 3-0, 7-4. Central (3-1, 5-4) tumbled a half-game behind. The Tigers blew a 10-point lead as the Streaks battled pack behind a pressing defense. Woodstock built a lead of as many as six points with ttflde¥ S~ minute to play, but the Tigers scratched back to within one on a Rich Stempinski free throw. WHS' ROB Mecklenburg missed the front end of a one- and-one with 11 seconds left and Bill Heppner pulled down the critical rebound for CLC. The Tigers had a chance to win in the waning secons, but Stempinski missed a 10-foot shot, and Mike Harvel missed the rebound attempt as the buzzer sounded. "I was really proud of the kids," said Central coach Arnie Kay. "When you're down ... and have no timeouts, your kids have to know what to do with the ball," he added.
