SECTION 2 • PACE 2 - PLAI1MDEALER HERALD. FRIDAY. DECEMBER 21.1984 United Way campaign *m at 69 percent of goal Gifts to the 1984 United Way of McHenry County Annual Cam paign reached $218,891 and 69 per cent of the ^315,000 goal In the week ending Dec. 9. Commenting on the campaign's progress, campaign chairman E. Louise Rogers of Northern Illinois Gas Company observed: "Good progress has occurred over the oast two weeks. Pledges reported Jo date are now $27,000 ahead of last year's results on the same •ate." Rogers explained how United Way sets its annual goal, stating: PThe annual goal is not a wishful Ugure pulled out of thin air by TJriited Way volunteers. The an nual goal is determined only after extensive research and evaluation of several factors. "The goal-setting process con siders the-legitimate needs of our member agencies, the experience and number of volunteers available to assist in the cam paign, the apparent level of com munity understanding and accep tance of United Way, giving trends established in prior cam paigns, and assessment of future community giving potential." Rogers added: "McHenry Coun ty's long-term giving potential is •Substantial. Because United Way is not as well developed locally as it is in communities like Elgin, Aurora, Rockford and Cook Coun ty, our average gift per county resident is lower than in those communities, but we have been growing at a faster pace than those communities." "Analysis by our board of direc tors two years ago indicated that our community campaign poten tial exceeds $700,000. The United Way board set a long term goal of $500,000 to be raised locally by 1987, and, it also set interim an nual objectives needed to reach the 1987 target. Our 1983 objective and actual goal were $225,000. Our final results totaled $254,000, reflecting a $61,000 increase in community support from the previous year. "Two years ago we set an objec tive of $1276,000 for the 1984 cam paign. In June of this year, the Campaign planning committee set I higher 1984 goal of $315,000, the ^ame dollar increase, but a ^mailer percentage increase than jr/e achieved in 1983." V Rogers gave stte^foUowing, Assessment of the 1984 campaign in light of the earlier objective and %t>al set by United Way: "It now Appears that the 1984 campaign van set a new local giving record 4for the sixth consecutive year by surpassing the $254,000 pledged in 1983. It also appears that We are within striking distance of reaching our initial 1984 campaign objective of $276,000 by the time the campaign concludes on Jan. 29." "However, fulfillment of our full $315,000 is a real challenge. It all depends on how successful we are in attracting gifts from the ma jority of local residents and employers who have not previous ly participated in the annual cam paign. Some progress in expan ding our contributor base is oc curring and our 250 campaign volunteers are continuing their best efforts to sell the United Way giving concept and achieve the goal in the remaining few weeks of the campaign." > NIMC schedules blood draw in response to holiday need l ~r£\ iident of of *hrefe OUR GOAL $315,000 IOO Director Mike Hogan, a resident Ringwood, was one directors re-elected at the re cent McHenry FS annual meeting. McHenry FS has an nounced plans to extend its service division to include farm financial planning, farm management and record keeping services. On Wednesday, Dec. 26, Northern Illinois Medical Center will sponsor a blood drawing for the Aurora Blood Bank. Although primarily an em ployee drive, the public is in vited and urged to participate. i While the need for blood is always urgent, the holidays often bring an increased demand, making it vital that many types of blood are available. Northern Illinois Medical Center is one of 22 member hospitals in the Aurora Blood Bank, and sponsors blood drawings twice a year. A single blood donation provides a unit of whole blood, which can be used to transfuse a patient, or into several bl< such as plasmsf, or white bl< Donors should ages of 17 and 65' least 110 pounds, are suitable candii processed products, blood cells, concentrate, between the and weigh at Most people tes as blood donors unless they are anemic, pregnant, or have high blood ; < pressure. To protect the donor and the future patient from any adverse effect, a brief physical examination and a test for hemoglobin wjll be given to all prospective donors. Conditions liable to be af fected by blood donation are: heart disease, epilepsy, in fectious disease, diabetes, or acute allergy. It is also necessary that a donor's tem perature,' blood pressure, and pulse are normal. Advances in surgery, medicine, drug treatment and i immunology have resulted in safer and more effective blood and blood products available for health protection of the public. Blood banking has grown and developed through the generosity of volunteer donors. The Aurora Blood Bank stores blood from drawings in an eight- county area. Any resident of McHenry County is entitled to free blood. However, blood is available anywhere in the United States to a family Health department offers nursing services The McHenry County Depart ment of Health Eileen Hanson Nursing Division receives funding from the McHenry County Mental Health Board (708) for two Mental Health Programs. The divison counsels parents to assist them in growth and development in parenting skills. The Public Health nurse assesses and observes infants an<J children, and refers multi-problem famHies to other sources for assistance with their problems. The division is a member of the Comprehensive Mental Health System and has the support of the five agencies that comprise the system. During the most recent Fiscal Year for which totals are available, the nurses made 2,243 home visits on infants and children in the program. The other program supported by the Mental Health Board in cludes nursing home visits to pa tients with mental health pro blems. The individuals are refer red to the" department by a psychiatrist and the focus is to sustain the patient in the home setting and prevent institu tionalization of the patient. , N Some families only need sup port, some need supervision and some need injections. The nurses follow the orders of the physicians and report progress or regression of the patients to the physician on a regular basis. During the most recent Fiscal Year for which there are totals available, 475 home visits were conducted by the nursing staff in the program. member of a donor to the Aurora Blood Bank. The blood bank tries to draw 175 to 200 units of blood daily to maintain its member hospitals, anri also provides a 24-hour-a- day service to those members. Northern Illinois Medical Center's blood drawing will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the small dining room at the new facility on Route 31 and Bull Valley Road. Appointments may be made by calling the hospital's Community Relations Department at (815) 385-2201, ext. 711.
