Coupon yard sales can be a great success Put 11 • PLA11MDEALER HERALD, fEPNLSDAV.DECEMBER 1ft* Service news "By June Fuller Dear June-Your column came to mind when I told my husband, Bob, oneevening that I was planning to have a yard sale. "Why don't you have a coupon yard sale?" he said. I asked turn how it would work and he explained to me as much as he could remember of what he had read in one of your columns. Coupon Clipper I put a classified ad in the newspaper. It read "Coupon- Cash Yard Sale. Coupons Wanted..." and I listed the brands that I frequently used. Then I listed some of the things I had for sale, like a piano, TVs, cJ0thing and toys. On a Saturday at 7 a.m., my husband, son, daughter and I were in the driveway to watch the sun come up. Before the first buyers arrived, we set up a white presentation board listing all the coupons we would accept in alphabetical order. When the first buyers arrived, we explained the coupons were as good as cash-up to $10 an item. A person who gave us a 30- • cent coupon on a $1 item needed an additional 70 cents in cash to make the purchase. If a person had a 50-cent coupon and wanted to buy an item priced at 25 cents, the item was their's, but we .•didn't give change. Although we tried to make our advertisement as clear as possible, some people thought that the coupons we listed were items we hati for sale, and they showed up hoping to get bargains on things like Cheerios and Final Touch. One lady showed up with a big envelope full of coupons that she wanted to trade with us. One of the things we learned was to be very specific about the coupons we wanted-not just Kool-Aid, but unsweetened Kool Aid. It was also awkward and time consuming to count up a btgyers coupons. At our next coupon sale we will have a special table set up where buyers can stack up the coupon portion of their purchase in 50- cent piles. Thank you for sharing such an innovative idea!-Bonnie and Bob Roush, Boiling Spring, Pa. Dear Bonnie and Bob-I loved your letter and congratulate vou on your successful yard sale. I'm sure it will inspire other readers to try it. Early next spring I will write a column incorporating the very latest ideas on running a coupon yard sale. Here is this week's list of refund offers.
