McHENRY LED 42-41 at the end of three periods, and the Warriors broke the game open in the middle stages of the fourth quarter. Ahead by three points (48-45) with 5:19 to play, the Warriors went on a roll and outscored the Chargers 8-2 in a span of two minutes. D-C guard Joe Dougherty picked up his fourth foul with 5:12 left to play, and McHenry guard Scott Freund promptly converted a pair of free throws. A Craig Hill jumper put the Warriors up by five (£2-47), and his subsequent steal of an errant Charger pass led to the next McHenry basket. Warrior forward Pat Dunne bagg ed a turnaround Jumper to put McHenry up by seven (54-47) with- 3:38 to go, and then it was time for another steal by Hill, as the Warrior forward came away with his second theft of the game. HILL'S SECOND STEAL set up a Joe Tonyan basket from 17-feet away, and for all intents and pur poses, it was lights out for the Chargers. "We had two things in mind before the game," Ludwig said. "One, we wanted to stop their fast break; we didn't want to get into a running ganewith them "Secondly, we wanted to minimize their transition game. I felt we had v to get into a half-court game in order to win." About the only thing the Warriors failed to do was shut down D-C center Dan Schultz. By Brian Spears Plain dealer-Herald News Service CARY -- It's always nice to have a player who can score 27 points in a game. Unfortunately for the Marian Central Hurricanes' girls' basketball team, Michelle Lalor's 27 points were backed by just nine from the rest of her team as the 'Capes fell to Grayslake, 44-36, in the Cary- Grove Christmas Tournament Wednesday night. "That's one of our problems. We only have one or two players doing most of the scoring," Marian coach Don Penza said. Lalor's 27 points were backed by Donna Remke's eight and Donna Kelly's one. They were the only Hurricanes to score in the contest. In the first quarter, Marian played its best basketball on the night which translated into a 14- 11 after one quarter. Lalor scored 10 and Remke had four in the opening period. "THAT'S JUST what they're capable of doing," Penza said, referring to the way his team played in the first quarter. . t)le of Dla^ • *" * kind of game.1 But the second quarter was a completely different story. "In St he second quarter we didn't make a bucket. You can't do that and win ballgames," Penza said. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs had their best quarter of the night. They made only three field goals themselves, but took advantage ' of Marian fouls and made 10 free ; throws. GL, which was in the bonus 2:16 into the second half, was led by Heather Dunbar's eight-of-nine charity shots in the period to lead the Rams to a comfortable 27-17 half time lead. MARIAN RALLIED in the early minutes of the third quarter and came back with the first four points to cut its deficit to six, but the Hurricanes managed only two more the rest of quarter, allowing the Bulldogs to increase their lead to 35-23. Grayslake held its biggest lead, 14 points, two minutes into the fourth quarter. Lalor's 12 fourth-period points led a Marian charge that pulled the Hurricanes within six, but with only 21 seconds remaining, it was too little too late. Marian Central committed 21 fouls in the game compared to 11 by Grayslake. This gave the Bulldogs 25 free throws in the 'game, including 10 bonus op portunities. The Bulldogs made 16 of the 25 gratis tosses while the Hurricanes, who also shot well from the line, connected on eight of 1Q, but only shot one bonus freethrow.
