UM KMBKK 21. |«MM Johnsburg High matmen take three of fopr, jump above .500 johnsburg's young wrestling squad showed great resilience over the weekend, winning three of four matches after a disastrous three-match losing streak. The Skyhawks were bounced around by Grant, and then McHenry and Waukegan East in a double dual match, two weeks ago. But the JHS crew pleased coach Mike Roberts by claiming three lopsided victories, and losing a close match to Jacobs. "We're 6-5 now, and I'm pleased with that," said Roberts. "We really needed to be above 500 before Christmas. This is a real boost for us." Leading the way for JHS in the double dual romp over Hampshire (48-18) and Richmond-Burton (58- 12) were Terry Eifler (119), who pinned both opponents, as did Jim Walker (126). Heavyweight Bob Bentz won by pin over his Hamp shire opponent, and forfeit over R- B. MARK DUMELLE (167) tied his Hampshire foe, 0-0, and pinned his R-B rival. "Mark has wrestled the guy from Hampshire, Tom O'Shea, five times in the last two years," Roberts explained, "and they've each won two, and now tied once. They really battle each other." The team of Brian Hauck and Shaun Kee took turns at 138 lbs., Hauck pinning his Hampshire op ponent, and Kee doing the same to his Richmond foe. John Shiman (145) won 14-0 over HHS, and 11-3 over R-B. David Thorn (132) beat Hampshire 13-1, and pinned against R-B. In a double dual Saturday against Jacobs and St. Edward's, Johnsburg dropped a 31-24 match to the Golden Eagles, but rebound ed to trounce the Green Wave, 48- 18. Double winners for the SkyhaWks were Walker, who pinn ed both his opponents, giving him four pins in four matches and Dumelle. Kee pinned against Jacobs, and tied against St. Ed. -v. . • . ... The Businessmen were in con trol all the way, notching their fourth straight win. Bentz led all scorers with 19, while Joe and brother John Beyers added 15 points each. Jeff Meyers' 11 and Joe Huemann's 10 helped Johnsburg's balanced at tack. Ben Himpleman had 15 and Brett Decker 10 for Murphy's - The Gambler, which fell to 2-2 on the season. BUSINESSMEN: 39 38 - 77 MURPHY'S-G AMBLER: 2130 -51 St. Regis Pub grabbed its first victory in four tries as Kevin Weiss scored 24 points -- 16 in the .second half -- to lead the Pub over Henehan & Mclntyre, 69-56. Rob Mortell (16 points), Kurt Wozny (11) and Mark Dehn (10) gave Regis some added double- figure scoring. Bill Henehan had 22 points for the losers, while Dan Lalor chip ped in 17 and Dean Bentley 11. Henehan & Mclntyre drops to 0- 4, Regis is 1-3. HENEHAN &McINTYRE:28 28-56 ST. Todd Green's 17 tallies paced Christopher's, while Dave Lawson had 15, Willie Howard 14 and Tim Pankiewicz 11. Greg Davis was the only State Farm player in double figures with 14 points. State Farm fell to 1-3, while Christopher's Men's Wear upped its record to 4-0, as the winners head into a head-to-head clash with the undefeated Businessmen on Wednesday, Jan. 9 (the next regular season game) at 6:45 p.m. CHRISTOPHER'S: 39 42 - 81 STATE FARM: 1729-46 MARIAN (Continued from page 18) season-high 35 points in the game. "He (Harttieb) was hitting them from everywhere. He was driving, he was hitting from the outside and he was making the free throws," Rokus said. "He's been hitting 15 or 20 a game. He's scoring like we thought he would. He's still got some nagging injuries, but this was by far his best scoring game that I've seen." WHAT WAS even nwefnv pressive about Hagtuel i performance was that 17 of his points came in the fourth quarter after he had been working hard for three full quarters, playing tough defense and bringing the ball up the *, court against the Round Lake press. Hartlieb's 35 points may have overshadowed Will's out standing game. The senior guard added 22 points to the Hurricane effort. "Round Lake has been playing some real good ball," Rokus said. The Panthers got off to a good start this season by winning their Thanksgiving tournament, but Marian Cen tral's win dropped them to 6-5 while the 'Canes ended a seven- game losing streak to improve to 3-7. „ The Hurricanes "got out of the gate pretty good," as Rokus put it. Will scored 10 in the first quarter and Harttieb added six to give Marian a 16-8 lead going into the second. "They (the Panthers) played man-to-man so we isolated them (Hartlieb and Will). We posted them down low and they had the hot hand so we went to them," Rokus explained. do little to lessen the Hurricanes lead in the second quarter, as Hartlieb and Will each scored six more to help Marian hold a 34-27 lead at Ihe half. Defensively, the Hurricanes played a sagging zone to force the taller Round Lake team to shoot from the outside. "They had more height. We went with four guards so we had to struggle on the boards," Roku£ said. Round Lake closed the gap to 48-45 at the end of the fourth quarter, but Hartlieb's 17 fourth- quarter points kept the 'Canes ahead by five or six through most of the final period. However, "Andy got a little tired at the end and missed some MARIAN (72): Hartmann 10-0 2; Stevens 2 0-0 4; Green 2 0-0 4; Wozny 2 1-1 5; Will 10 2-4 22; Hartlieb 14 7-10 35. Totals: 3110-15- 72. Bentz lost to Jacobs' Mark Piskule, 9-8, and won by forfeit against St. Ed. Piskule's win rais ed his record to 164). "Bob's only two losses this year have been to undefeated wrestlers, (the other being Dan Mahoney of Monftlni)." Bentz is now 14-2-1 on the season, the best record on the Skyhawk squad. Dumelle is close behind at 13-3-1. "We really needed to do well," Roberts said. "We're playing a tougher schedule this year, and these wins made us more positive about ourselves. I feel we'll be above .500 when the season's over." JHS will break until Jan. 4, when the 4Hawks will travel to Wauconda. free throws," Rokus said. This allowed Round Lake to tie the game, resulting in the last- second heroics by Hartlieb. Whether the Hurricanes will advance in the tournament or not depends on tonights game between Jacobs and Round Lake. The preliminaries of the Northern Illinois Classic involve three-team round robin tour naments, from which two teams advance. Marian is now 1-1 in the preliminaries while Jacobs -Is f^luKTROtdte Lake is 0-1. A Jacobs win ensures the 'Canes of advancing while a Panther win will make advancement dependent on points.
