The McHenry County Defenders will sponsor one of its regular recycling drives (first and third Saturday of each month) on Jan. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot of McHenry Community High School West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Rd, McHenry. ' Co-sponsoring the drive will be the HUMMERS, a group devoted to maintaining and protecting the Huntley-Union- Marengo prairie, which stret ches between those towns along the Chicago Northwestern Railroad tracks. According to a McHenry County Defenders spokesman, "If your house is like many homes, the remains of Christ mas and New Year's cheer are crowding you out. Bring those bottles and 100 percent aluminum cans to the recycling drive and kill two brids with one stone: clean out your house and help " the sponsoring organizations." Other items which can be recycled include used motor oil, newspaper, aluminum scrap of all kinds, cardboard and brown paper bags, and "tin" cans which have been rinsed and flattened. The Defenders will purchase the 100 percent aluminum cans, paying two cents more per pound for crushed cans than for uncrushed ones. An additional penny per pound will be paid for lots of more than 100 pounds. On the second Thursday of each month (Jan. 10), a buy- back program is held in the parking area behind McHenry FS, 4004 W. Waukegan Rd., McHenry. Access to the area is made via Borden Street. From 9 a.m. to noon, aluminum cans and glass containers will be purchased. For additional information, contact a Defender represen tative at 385-8512.
