JANUARY 9.19»5 Crime of the Week Chamber turns focus to Trade Fai This week Crime Stoppers is seeking information on an ar med robbery that netted thousands of dollars in cash and collector's coins for two robbers, when they held up a coin shop in Crystal Lake. 459-4800 On Sunday, Dec. 12, shortly after 4 p.m. two men accosted the owner of Family Coins and Investments, located at 366 Virginia St., Crystal Lake. One ^formation inch tall, the othetwas five feet, nine inches. Both wore blue jeans. The shorter suspect had a blue vest on and wore gloves. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for in formation leading to the arrest and filing of criminal charges against offenders. Although studded tires have been banned in Illinois since 1976, tire chains are legal and far out-perform any other traction equipment on any size vehicle, according to the Safe Winter Driving League. B _ Tests conducted by the National Safety Council have shown that reinforced tire chains provide from four to seven times the pulling ability of regular tires on snow or ice. Stopping distance on ice is also greatly affected by tire chains. Additional tests with rear-wheel drive vehicles in dicated that tire chains reduce stopping distance on ice by 50 percent when compared to stopping with snow tires or regular tires. In addition, a new, smaller type of steel link tire chain has been designed for small cars. These chains reduce stopping distance on ice by 60 percent when used on front-wheel drive vehicles, and by 39 percent on rear-wheel drive vehicles.
