J AM'AH> <». 1985 Sports Sports log Snoball Softball in CL ROCKFORD -- The Northerri Illinois Chapter of the March of Dimes is holding a Snoball Softball tournament Jan. 12 and 13, at the Crystal Lake Park District fields. The team entry fee for all three divisions of play -- men's, women's and co-ed -- fs $50. The entry deadline is Wednesday, Jan. 9. Snoball Softball is a national March of Dimes program and features the summer fun of softball brought to snow-covered playing fields. The winners of the Crystal Lake tournament automatically advance to the Rockford tournament, scheduled for Jan. 19-20, and those winners will then be entered into the national event in'Omaha, Neb. Feb 1-3. To enter, call the March of Dimes at 397-0097. The proceeds from this tournament, as well as from all March of Dimes' fundraisers, go toward research, medical services and educational programs to prevent birth defects, the nation's most serious child health problem. Raceway awards Jan. 12 The Lake Geneva Raceway, frequented by many area drivers, will hold its anriual awards dinner Saturday, Jan. 12, at the American Legion Hall in Genoa City. The doors will open at 7 p.m., with dinner at 8 p.m. and dancing to follow. Tickets are $12 at the door, and the public^ invited. Awards will be presented to qualifying racers, ) Opening day for the 1985 season at/Lake'Geneva day, April 15. 1 Raceway is Satur- Ice fishing derby set The McCullom Lake Conservation Club will hold its annual ice fishing derby Jan. 12-13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission fee is $1. Bait, fishing license, food and refreshments will be available at the McCullom Lake Beach House. There will be hourly prizes awarded plus daily prizes for largest and smallest fish. The McCullom Lake Beach House is located one mile west of Route 31 on McCullom Lake Road, just north of McHenry. Medalists at Horizon ROSEMONT -- Track enthusiasts who were unable to attend the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles will have a rare opportunity to see many of the Games' finest cqflpetitors in action at the 1985 Bally In­ vitational on Sunday. Jan. 27. at 12:30 p.m. at the Rosemont Horizon. An outstanding Men's Mile run will highlight this year's meet. Indoor World Record Holder Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland will make his first Chicago-area appearance against a formidable field, including: 1984 Bally Champion and Olympic fifth-placer Jim Spivey of Bensenville, American Record Holder Steve Scott and Lake Forest's Richie Harris who ran the fastest mile by an American in 1984. Fifteen Olympic medalists representing 21 overall medals will be led by triple gold medalist Valerie Brisco-Hooks, who will compete in the 400 meter dash. An additional five gold medalists will compete, in­ cluding hurdler Benita Fitzgerald, jumper-hurdler A1 Joyner, and sprinters Alonzo Babers, Alice Brown and Sam Graddy. •• * '•» •• . ,' /v"" Other outstanding events include the Men's Hurdles, with Olympic silver medalist Greg Foster from Maywood; the Pole Vault, with bronze medalist Earl Bell and former Indoor World Record Holder Billy Olson. Ski trip panned The City of McHenry Parks & Recreation Department invites all students and adults to come and celebrate the school holiday and spend a full day of skiing at Alpine Valley Ski Resort.
