JANUARY 9.1985 Sports Second-half rally lifts Marian Central to win Plalndealer-Herald News Service WOODSTOCK -- Hans Rokus called it one of the most memorable wins he's had in his seven years as Marian Central basketball coach. And although it improves the Hurricanes' record to just' a. meager 1-4 in the Northwest Suburban Conference, it was a good win to get and hopefully a sign of things to come. Marian overcame a 17-point, third-quarter deficit and out- scored Grant, 22-9; in the fourth period to post a 55-52 NWSC win Friday night. TWi victory lifts Marian to 4-7 overam' "iKtoas just the nature of the game/v Rokus began. "They (the Bulldogs) came in here undefexted and in first place, we were at a distinct height disadvantage and we were playing with -different per sonnel. It was one of the most satisfying wins in some time." Rokus used two sophomores and a freshman during much of the contest and the un- dercla&smen responded with key performances. Freshman Jim Hartlieb scored only four points, but the two hoops came at a critical time in the fourth quarter. £ .. MARIAN, which got out of the blocks well and sprinted to a 12-7 lead after one quarter, fell victim to Grant's tall front line in the second period. The guests tallied 23 points in the second quarter and limited Marian to only six in taking a 30-18 half- time advantage. "They just kept shoving the ball inside. They were killing us inside," Rokus said of the Grant front line that sported two 6-foot- 5 players. "They got a lot of second and third shots and that height started wearing us down." As if the Hurricanes didn't have enough problems, leading scorer Andy Hartlieb picked up his third personal foul in the quarter and went to the bench. So at halftime, it was time to make some changes. "We changed oar defease. We came out and started putting pressure on the guards and we on a tear. "After we spread them out, they couldn't get the ball in side," Rokus said. "During a string late in the third quarter and early in the fourth, we scored on 12 straight possessions (either a basket or a free -throw)." The 'Canes went on a 20-3 tear during that time and tied the contest at 48 with 2:00 left. Andy Hartlieb led the Hurricanes' scoring in that streak as he tallied nine points while Tom Tom Will added five and Bill Hartmann chipped in four. "Bill and Jim (Hartlieb) both had real big baskets in the fourth quarter?' Rokus said. "We had to keep the pressure on them. That's what got us the Igad," Rokus said. "Once we did that, they were rattled and thay had to start fouling us." ^ . .MARIAN HAD two chances to ice the game, but Curt Stevens and Hartmann missed -front ends of the bonus. Hartmann's miss came with : 15 to play, but Stevens claimed the rebound and dished the ball to Andy Hartlieb who was fouled. The senior connected on both free throws to give the 'Canes a 55-50 lead with :07 remaining. Rokus, who earlier in the season said his team would "start to jell around Christ mastime" said he feels that his pre-season prediction may be starting to come true. ."I thought we played well (in a loss) against Grayslake and we played Jacobs (Class AA) tough for three-and-a-half quarters," he said. "The win over Round Lake (which Marian won at the tfit$gzer in the Nor thern Illinois Classic) was the, real shot in the arm for us. This win (over Grant) is just another step on that ladder." Andy Hartlieb led the Marian scoring attack with 20 points while Will added 12 and Hart mann 10. The Hurricanes are on the road for the next four games as they travel to Wauconda this Friday. Pat Bjerning (185) was fourth in his class. "With eight teams in the tourna ment, you'd expect to have, on the average, lVfe wrestlers win cham pionships. We had three, that's twice the average, and we had three others in the finals. That's pretty good. We're happy with that," said Roberts. "ANYTIME YOU have half of your team wrestling in the finals of a tournament, that's pretty good," he added. Roberts said winning the Geneva fracas was a team goal for Johnsburg. "We wanted to do it. We thought we could. It was real tight all day with St. Ed's. They were on our heels all day long. Always right behind us. But we wrestled well, and achieved our goal." Roberts lauded the efforts of Walkeff who has shone brightly in recent matches. "He's got five pins in his last six iContinued from page 20) r nON'T BE FOOLED WITH GIMMICKS. Prior, to the Wauconda match, the last JHS outing was tf)ec. 22. "They were a little slow, but they got going after a while," Roberts said. "We needed the break. This is the first year we went on such a long break, and it was good for the kids. I think we'll take the time off again next year, too." The Skyhawks will try to im prove their record Thursday and Friday, as they travel to Rkhmond-Burton, and host Lake Zurich, respectively. WANT TO CARPOOL? There are a few surprises in the field of the top five, as the first place votes were quite diverse. We will review the top five and recap some of the other top vote-getters in Friday's edition.
