SPORTS POLL -- We've aH heard how profession al football has been losing viewers on aU three networks, and the many reesons given for the decline. But CBS says not to worry. That network and "The New York Times took a poll tost month and they can reassure us that pro fessional football is still America's favorite sport on TV. . The poll was a random sample of 1.340 adults. 910 were sports fans and 774 were football fans. It revealed, many interesting surprises. For instance, the Dallas Cowboys are stW Americans favorite Heam, and the Miami Dolphins' Dan Marino is the nation's favorite active player Joe Nemath was voted the country's favorite retired player. Brigham Young University and Bos ton College are tops in the college ranks, and two- thirds of the pro footbaH fans would not recommend changes in the game. In a vote for the favorite spoils, football got 53 percent, as compared with baseball's 18 percent and basketball's 13 percent. One wonders what the result would be if the pod were taken in the middle cf the World Series. When asked if referees should use instant televi sion replays to make sure they made the right deci sion. 68 percent Of the footbaH fans approved. The debate about high-scoring and low-scoring games ended in almost a dead heat, with low scoring being slightly ahead. Only 25 percent of the football afi cionados think there is too much violence in the pro game. Was there too much football on TV? Thirty-four percent said there was too much. 59 percent said it's just right and 5 percent said there was too little. This could be a tip-off on those interviewed: When asked who won the Super Bowl game last year, XXXIX percent gave the right answer: XIII percent offered the wrong answer and XXXXVIII percent didn't know. ©1S8S Computes 10:30 AM ̂Newsmakers O City Desk (11) 31 ® MoHiim at Hm Bijou 'Thunderbolt' and 'White CkHi Over Dover' are featured.
