State economic develi officials scheduled a meetings for Jan. 23 to seek input from communities in terested in proposing a site for General Motors' new Saturn automobile . manufacturing facility. "We want to give every TiHnmU community a chance to be considered before concrete proposals are made to GM of ficials/' Governor James Thompson said. "Mayors, county board chairmen, local economic development officials and legislators are being invited to briefings in Chicago, Springfield and Carbondale. These briefings will provide the details on the Saturn project that communities will need to prepare proposals to attract the plant to their areas. "Illinois must take the initiative if we want to see the new Saturn plant and its 6,000 jobs come here. That's why the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs is moving so quickly on preparing site proposals to submit to GM of ficials." Illinois was the first state to contact GM and express an interest in bringing the Saturn facility to the land of lincoln, Thompson talked with GM Chairman Roger Smith last Wednesday ana then met with top Saturn officials in Detroit last Thursday, two days after GM im veiled the Saturn project. Saturn, the . first new GM division since 1918, is being promoted as an entirely new concept in automobile manufacturing as GM prepares to build more autos efficiently. Hie Saturn facility is expected to encompass four to five million square feet and require a site of at least 400 acres. GM officials also want close access to a railroad and have ruled out any location on a flood plain.
